Sat Nav

The Tomtom Camper Europe map is 8Gb. A crazy large size to download out of the minimal data allowance you get on a pre paid sim. I suggested they break it up into individual countries (or groups of the smaller ones).
Do u have to connect to a pc to do this?

This year I have invested in an Avtex (garmin) satnav. My husband is disabled and unable to manage map reading or driving, so it’s all down to me so a good satnav that knows my vehicle size etc is essential. You enter the motorhome dimension and from then on you can select car or motorhome depending on the vehicle that journey.
We have spent 3 weeks in Northumberland and 3 weeks in France this year and it’s been brilliant. I’ve used the standard address and postcode navigation as well as the long/lat navigation, planned and programmed our own route to go to places we wanted to go to on the way. The satnav hasnt taken us anywhere it shouldn’t. It’s been brilliant. Oh and you can select poi, campsites, parking and all sorts of different categories displayed....find supermarket, petrol station and and and.....

We had quite a contrasting experience in Anglesey, North Wales, and Derbyshire with the Garmin 760 and just seemed to end up on so many single tracks with it, but not the actual device to blame though, more the mapping info. But now are quite wise to it's navigational failings so double check all routes that it suggests?

As do others on here, I use a Garmin 760. It was purchased with free updates for lifetime using Garmin Express. All I can do really is echo some of the more negative comments about it! Some examples:

My motorhome is kept at home. Leaving, I always get the message "motorhome access unknown." That doesnt come when returning.

Quite often, it tries to take me on parallel roads to motorways and autobahns, only to rejoin it later. For some reason, this happens mostly near airports such as Frankfurt, Copenhagen.

Possibly the worst thing though is the fact that with every update, it seems to get more and more inaccurate. Currently, its about 400 metres wrong on some motorway exits.

Even if Express is easy to use, my opinion is that it does tend to be a bit slow updating even with the 100/100 line I'm using at home. Sometimes, I'm not even sure if the maps really are updated. On one route I travel on a regular basis, a roundabout that has been there for years is still not shown.

To complete the very first update, I had to buy a memory chip as there wasnt enough internal memory.

According to Garmin here, their now discontinued BC20 reversing camera will not work with the 760. Their BC30 is incompatible. More out of curiousity than anything else, have others found the same?

I don't know what the total difference is between the 660 and the 760, but I would have thought it would have been just the screen size (660 is 6", 760 is 7")? The reason I am making this comment is that I use a BC30 with the 660 and it works very nicely.
Have you actually tried the BC30 and found it didn't work?

I get the "motorhome inaccessible" at home but that makes sense as the first two roads before the main road are not classified. occasionally get the Sat-Nav attaching to the wrong road when there are two parallel ones but I have had that happen on probably every Sat-Nav/Routing system I have ever used (from memory - Garmin Portable, Tom-Tom Portable, Google Maps on phone, Toyota Fixed, Citroen Fixed, Garmin Fixed, Honda Fixed).

The information that the BC30 wouldnt work came directly from Garmin when I spoke to them. So, I've never bought one to try.

The strange thing about the "Motorhome Accessibility Unknown" warning is only that it appears when leaving, not when returning. At least, not if I return from the south. If I return from the West, it tries to take me on a detour, first to the north, then to the East onto my road at the other end. That turning really is inaccessible for motorhomes!

Is there any way of transferring data from one sat nav to another? I’ve got loads of favourites added to mine of places I’ve parked up over the channel - if I upgraded would I have to put them all in manually?

I got the Garmin 760LMT model as I read that there were issues with the 770 and I get lifetime updates and traffic. Even on Motorhome mode it still takes me down some surprisingly narrow lanes, even single track. I think I'll just oversize my motorhome dimensions (currently L 7.3m x w 2.4m x h 3.0m) in it and see if that makes any difference? It really just seems the same as car mode to me.
had the same problem went into settings on my satnav changed symbol from car to lorry then satnav only took me on A roads not a garmin but worth a try.does say when i am doing 65mph on the motorway that i am over the speed limit so i know i am in lorry mode.

If you have the power lead that has the camera receiver in it, it could be worth a try? Amazon sell the BC30 Cameras so you could get one and if it doesn't work, return it as "performance inadequate" (I think that this the option?).
As mentioned I use the BC30 with my 660 (it was actually a Garmin bundled kit) and I have a second BC30 that works as a secondary camera (select between the two from an icon in the screen)

Sat-Nav mapping can be very wrong sometimes. I recall one of my Sat-Navs (I think it was in the RAV4 unit - actually Garmin mapping built into a Kenwood unit) wanted to send me up a one-way road. The Honda unit wanted to send me up a road in Beer that became so narrow I decided to reverse back - and that was in my relatively small hatchback HR-V.
Road Signs always take priority :)

"Satnavs that get it wrong" could be a very funny topic on here....

I wonder what the road sign would be for this pothole?😄

If you are transferring from a Garmin to a new Garmin then you can use Garmin Express

If it is from a Tomtom that uses mydrive connect (not tomtom home) to a new Tomtom then it is easy using Tomtom Mydrive, you just log in to your new satnav and it is automatically transferred

When the Sat-nav is connected to a PC I think that you should be able to just go into the folders and copy and save the contents to transfer to another Sat-nav.

Garmin's site say's that my 760 can use any third-party camera that is PAL or NTSC, but does not state this for the 660.

When you get a new satnav just post again with details of the old and the new one if you need help
Just the man ?
Travelling through France and part of Spain my inbuilt (clunky) xzent sat nav mostly showed the default speed limit 31mph (50kmh) . Occasionally changed and showed motorway/town limits but , more often than not , reverted to 31mph .
No big deal but you get used to limit being updated . Just wondered what cause could be

I now guess that it's just the wiring of the 4 pole video input plug though will know for sure soon enough. Hence the different camera compatibility maybe? 🤔

4 pole video input plug? it is a wireless camera.
I use the power lead that came with the 660 and that is also the Camera Receiver. There is some kind of booster you can connect on but I never needed to use it (I am guessing it maybe for if you connect the camera to the back of a caravan?)

What is the model number and the age of the maps?, the speed limit data is in the maps so if it hasn't got the full data in there it cannot show the correct speed limit, have you updated the maps?, does it show the speed limit OK in the UK?

Updated maps in September , seriously out of date !
Think it showed correct speed limit in UK . Just noticed it in France . Thing is it sometimes shows the correct limit . So not consistent .
Even when showing default limit (31mph) your actual speed indication will go red if you are exceeding the speed limit whether that be 19 mph or whatever .
Don't know what the reputation of these machines is but I do , at times , feel like buying a separate sat nav
