Does anyone have any experience? Tommy has started drawing 3d stuff now (Autodesk inventor) and I said I'd get a 3d printer once he's able to draw things.

But what to get?

I think Runnach has experience of their use but maybe doesn’t own one (yet).

If I was still working I could have got you some info Steve. One of my ex workmates bought two from a China, he said cheap as chips and he printed all manner of stuff on them

I have one - bargain basement jobby that comes in kit form and you have to build yourself - but not used it for ages as found it tempremental with the hot end (the nozzle the filament comes out of) a problem with it blocking up. need to look at it again really!

Printed some useful stuff though :) But it is a sloooowwwww process (the faster 3D Printers are mucho dinero)

This is the printer at work printing a box. At this stage it has been going for 4 hours!

This is what it is printing

Overall, could be a great thing to have but you have to have patience using it, a willingness to accept prints go wrong and just need to start again and not get frustrated in the process.

I have a Monoprice Maker Select 3d printer, bought from Amazon UK for about £199 this time last year. Loads of info and upgrades to be found on Thingyverse. I use OpenScad as for designing and OctpoPi (Google it) to drive the printer.

I've designed and printed tons of stuff, great for anything up to 200x200x180mm.

Either Aldi or Lidl were selling some off at a greatly reduced price last week.

my son's got one, he was recently using it to print bits to make a cnc machine. he gets some code off t'internet and some he writes himself.he used it to make an articulated hand for a fortune tellinh automaton he designed . the printer cost about £150 thats all i know
oh yeah , he said he was planning to get an attachment to re-use waste plastic- sounded sensible

I think everyone must make an articulated hand Nigel, the guy I worked with did on. You can actually print fully articulated prosthetic hand. I did ask him to make me a leg but he wasn’t up for it lol

i'll have to ask him about that

To get a free 3D printer,buy a 3D printer,print a 3D printer,return 3D printer.
When you get a 3D printer kit, you can see that the parts are indeed printed on a 3D printer :)

wouldn't quite be free though ... the filament is not very cheap and it would take a full week of non-stop printing to do one!

Make, model, and if he'd still choose to buy that one would be awesome if you don't mind Nige :)
geetech , about £150 a couple of years ago .been reliable but you have to fiddle with it .does one colour but he thinks for that price you could probably get a much better one today . as for a 3d scanner , fergeddaboutit !

After reading this thread I decided to get my 3D printer back into operation :)
Well, I sorted out the hot end (nozzle where the filament gets melted and pushed through) and printed a couple of things (y)

But then a printer part broke

Fits in this part ...

Usually the fix for a broken part like this is simply to print a new part on your 3D printer, but a bit tricky if your 3D printer is broken

Now a request :p
Does anyone with a working 3D printer fancy making a new bit for me?
I think this would be a suitable part for my Printer (a Prusa i3 clone) and also an upgrade! (the part that broke has a definate weak point)

Available on thingyverse here - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:937967 - but it is only the part in the picture above that I am needing (once up and running again I could print off the other bits if needed.

re; prosthetics .spoke to lad, lower arms are just about possible and plans are availale , but the machines are a bit too small foranything bigger , so i suppose it would need to be printed in loads of sections- not great .
