Sampling local wines

This has long been a hobby for us on our travels. Last time in Greece I even did a spreadsheet with tasting notes so I knew what to buy next time I went to the shops. And what not to buy! Anyone that knows us knows that we like a glass or two… or should that read bottle!
James had an epiphany while sat on the toilet on the 30th September. He suggested that we go sober for October to raise money for MacMillan nurses. I agreed as we did not have long to think and talk ourselves out of it.
We have now done five days without a drop. Even went to a winery yesterday near Patras, Greece and all we did was sniff.
If anyone wants to contribute to our fundraising the link is https://www.gosober.org.uk/users/katherine-james-clune

Anyone else doing go sober for October?

Yes, and November, December....
I (we) just don't see the appeal of alcohol.
Works very well for us so we can drive away anytime should that peaceful little hideaway become the local's disco den late at night.

Well done Katerine & James. Only another 25 days to go!
No I'm not joining you. My excuse was that I had opened a very acceptable bottle of Gerwutzaminer on the 30th September and it needed to be finished in October.

Well done you two.... ordinarily I would join you as we had no plans to go away in the van in October and I don’t drink at home.... we have just signed up to the Stratford meet Phil is organising so no chance of being sober..🍷🍷🍷🍷😂😂😂😂

We are already seeing some health benefits from not drinking. More alert. Getting more done during the day. Sleeping better at night and James is up fewer times. Not to mention the benefit to our budget.

Well done. I'm pleased you are seeing the benefits so soon and happy to acknowledge them.
If you keep off the alcohol you will eventually become aware of the tiring references constantly being made for the normalisation of regular alcohol consumption.
They are everywhere. From the blatant movie product placement to the man on the weather forecast commenting on his intention to stay indoors and have a drink due to the inclement weather.
The references and propaganda are endless and always positive but the reality is far from the way it is portrayed.

I only have a drink very occasionally. I think that many drink to overcome social inhibitions when in a group, and that maybe I did too in the past. When at work certainly social drinking was the norm when off duty, but I found great benefits in abstaining and came to realise surprisingly that it was possible to cope socially without needing alchohol.

I agree. There is so much peer pressure to drink even if you would rather not.
I'm glad you found the other side!

I love socialising with my Muslim friends as they don't drink so I can enjoy the whole evening with them rather than just the beginning. Asian weddings can be enjoyed right to the very end.
Mango lassi beats all alcoholic drinks I have tried for the pleasure of the actual drink.

We’ve already agreed that we’ll not revert to daily drinking. But perhaps when we go out for a meal or with friends and certainly not as much. Not sure we would manage completely dry. We shall see.

That's the way I do it. I'm not teetotal, it just happens to be that I now only have a drink every couple of years or so.
Once you start making your own (genuinely your own) choice about when to drink you will most likely find you do it less and less. There become more reasons not to drink than to drink.
When going out as a couple and one has to drive; a better night is had is neither of you drink so you remain on the same mental level. No arguments, no putting up with a drunk partner and the option to go elsewhere together after the event.

Can't disagree with that , speaking as someone who drinks .
I travel through Bordeaux , Burgundy , Jerez regions .
Huge economies based on alcohol . Scotland too . No point in pretending those with interests don't protect their 'culture' .
I enjoy a drink though get annoyed with myself when , as does happen , I have a drink out of habit .
