Hi all. Well dvla have sent me a form telling me that before dealing with my 70. C1 application they want me to have a tread mill ECG. Anyone had one. Is it hard or,,,,, I have copd/ asthma. As well as two stents. I don't think I would be able to do the 9 minutes reqd to pass anyone know any answers. I.e. Can other test be done instead. Brian. ,

Yes, and it is hard. The first 3 minutes are ok then the rate and incline increase for the next three minutes and again for the last three minutes. I was within 20secs of giving up but the Consultant pushed me on. Changed MH before next test to avoid the treadmill. I believe that an alternative, drug induced option is available, but I did not wish to take that route. Good luck.

Husband has copd and asthma so we decided to keep the van we have because of that and he knew he wouldn’t be able to do the treadmill and he just turned 70 in August

Don’t think I would work the treadmill too well so will have to have the needle when the time comes.

From my experience, actually getting a treadmill based ECG may not be that simple anyway.
I paid for a full private medical back in 2005 including an ECG assessment (nothing to do with driving, just a comprehensive healthcheck) and the hospital I went to was not able to do that test any longer for some reason - and I actually chose it as one of the few on the list that did!
(bit annoying, but got my money back for that part of the checkup)

Many people who are told they need a treadmill test have used a specialist motoring medical service instead of their GP. They usually do this because it is cheaper. My advice is to use your GP like I did. You might find you get your new licence without any additional tests required, I did. I am having my second medical for my C1 retention next Thursday which will cost £85. Nothing has changed in the past 3 years, so I don't expect to have much trouble. My licence expires in February but I am having the medical early because my GP is retiring at the end of December. The medical and eye test are valid for 4 months from the date they were done, so I will pop the forms in the post a couple of days before it expires. That way I might claw back a few of the days they robbed me of last time.

I am on heart tablets (low dosage Ramipril and Bisoprolol). A few years ago, I had the alternative to the treadmill test (not connected to a driving licence). I actually had two tests on consecutive days. The first one was an injection to slow the heart down and the next one was to speed the heart up. Neither were 'uncomfortable' at all.

I have a few years to go yet Jim but will use my GP as you say when the time comes👍

I intended to use my own GP and asked for a price which was an arm and a leg. Medical was done by a GP who specialises in this and was very methodical about ensuring the form was totally and accurately completed and about £80.
Unfortunately I have circulation problems and DVLA were concerned this may have effected my heart which resulted in DVLA requiring treadmill. At that time it was just after the tragedy with the bin lorry driver in Glasgow, who had heart problems and I just felt they were just being a bit overcautious. I did not attempt the next renewal but downgraded to under 3500Kg a move I have not regretted.

I was not going to bother to renew either ...

... then we rehomed 2 Whippets (making 4 dogs in total) and we need the space.

Hi all. Well treadmill ecg 5pm today. .........PASSED. After 9 mins. I don't think I would of passed if it had been 12 minutes. So now have to wait and hope dvla agree with the rest of the medical. Will let you all know. Bet I won't hear till end Jan. Feb.
