As pure wild campers water for us is somewhat important and so we leave home with a full tank. The vehicle is still new to us so we are still finding our feet and one issue is that on arrival our full tank has emptied by a good 20 litres. We are reading that this is a design issue as the tank is supposed to travel with only 20 litres in it. Yes wierd we agree but there it is.

Anyone got some ideas how to travel without losing water.

I would think it comes out of an overflow point you could find this and extend the pipe up six to eight inches and then down to the original height this will stop the symphony effect, I put a simple rubber baffle on the inside of our tank overflow pipe so as when filling slowly it will overflow when full but if you go round a corner and the water rushes towards the overflow the rubber baffle closes and you don’t lose any water

What age is it? On later models the fresh tank will only drop any water in excess of 20ltrs if the control on the tank is turned to that position. There is a second position to empty it completely. There is no automatic function to do it.

Yes the knob as per page 221 is correctly set and I tested it to make sure. anti and it began to drain and clockwise (which is where it was set) shut it off..

So where is the water going if it is not coming out of the drain down?

It is hard to suggest a solution to loosing 20ltrs of water if you have no idea where it is going. If the tank is full when you leave home and somehow it looses 20ltrs then I doubt it has anything to do with the 20ltr travelling capacity drain down system. I know this may be obvious but how do you know it looses 20ltrs when you are travelling? It is possible to see the level in the tank from outside how much does it drop? Perhaps there is an overflow pipe near the top of the tank and when the tank is filled to the brim perhaps water slops out of it due to movement?
 
Our Carthago has a similar system. There is no additional overflow on ours it just drains through the main outlet, the internal rotary valve is turned clockwise, past the point of resistance to allow you to travel with a full tank. By backing off the valve in a clockwise by half a turn, the valve allows the tank to discharge leaving 20 liters, fully turning the valve anti clockwise empties the tank. Possibly a faulty valve or you haven’t closed it right down.
Ps we never actually use the 20 litre mode, it’s just the weight conscious manufacturers making sure that they aren’t encouraging you to exceed the vans payload.
 
Surely the water is slopping out of the over flow / breather pipe as you drive

If you look in rearview mirror when going around bends on a dry day you should see the evidence as a line on the road surface
 
My guess is the small bore breather pipe has become detached from its spigot
connection at the tank. Water in the tank escapes soon as vehicle moves assuming tank is full.
Nearly all fresh water tanks ( and many waste water tanks) have to have a breather outlet connection
otherwise you'd get air locks when fast filling from say a mains hose. The other end of the breather
usually terminates at a dedicated spigot at the filler neck (ie high point).

The Burstner fills directly into the tank not via a wall filler. I guess the breather is incorporated into the filler capFresh water filler.png

So the filler cap has to always to be secured so as to form a perfect seal, because
the tank when full or near full and on the move is likely to leak, there's no freeboard
to speak of? Slopes or change in direction when the van moves can put a bit of
additional water pressure on the seal.
As far as I can see there, it looks like a slightly complicated solution to what
normally is solved by a high mounted filler point and a couple of pipes.

I presume, should the sidewall inspection cover leak the water would get into a cupboard and/or
floor structure? (a little difficult to see the image clearly). Inboard tanks generally have the insp.
cover on the top, so not under constant water pressure. Oh well I'm sure Burstner know best.
