App for Plotting and Recording your motorhome tour ?

Hello peeps,

I have just seen a web app called 'Relive'. Relive works in conjunction with devices such as Garmins or phone apps like Map my ride/ map my walk.

This screenshot is an example of a walk :

The app produces a video to show your walk and the photos and their locations along the route. This seems to work brilliant.
It also shows distance travelled and height gained. Relive and the mapmyride apps appear to be free.

It got me thinking wouldn't it be great if there were something similar for motorhome tours ? We often try to produce a record of where we have been,this would certainly add to that record.

I am going to try this in the motorhome with map my ride and see how it works out.

Does anyone know of any applications that do a similar function or perhaps might be better suited ?

I use map.me to plot our trips.
Red pins places to stop.
Orange pins routes
Green pins walking
Yellow pins food/ shops/ street food/ cafes etc
Purple pins places of interest
Pink pins for our granddaughter as she likes pink.

Use map.me as our satellite navigation on a IPad.

Also use Galileo Pro to track and plan our walks.

I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car.
A Satnav is a driver's friend it tells you where you are.
I have a little Satnav, i've had it all my life.
It's better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife.
It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive
"It's sixty miles an hour", it says, "You're doing sixty five”.
It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brake
And tells me that it's never ever, safe to overtake.

It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to green
It seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene.
It lists the vehicles just in front, and all those to the rear.
And taking this into account, it specifies my gear.
I'm sure no other driver, has so helpful a device.
For when we leave and lock the car, it still gives its advice.
It fills me up with counselling, each journey's pretty fraught.
So why don't I exchange it, and get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I'm properly fed.
It washes all my shirts and things, and keeps me warm in bed!
Despite all these advantages, and my tendency to scoff,
I only wish that now and then, I could turn the bugger off.

I am giving Polar Steps a try and it looks great. Thanks for the tip :)
 
I've been trying Polar steps just whilst I have been running around in the car locally. I have left it on for 2 days so far.

Positives :
  • Low power consumption, unlike a sat nav etc. As it gets it's location from Cellular and wifi.
  • Builds up the log by inserting Steps. A step can have a photo of the location and some notes.
  • Seems you turn it on and forget unless you want to add a step.
  • You can retrospectively add a step (for instance you have a photo of a location you want to add, or you can create a journey log after the event.
  • There is a facility (at a cost) of producing a glossy printed book of your journey.
  • There is a web version of the app so you can edit/create journeys on your laptop.
  • You can share your journey with others (you specify).
Negatives :
  • Polar Steps does not take your position constantly so your journey will be plotted on the map in a series of straight lines between points and steps. I think this will be good enough for most motorhome travel logs, however if you want to trace every bend you took in every road then this perhaps is not the right App for you.
With all Apps I worry about how long the App is going to be around. What happens in 5 years time when you want to look at a journey and find the app is no longer available ? I notice that there is a way of downloading your journeys so I will be looking into that.

I will be leaving it on for another few days to build up more of a 'journey' and trying to remember to put steps in and taking photos.
I shall also try it whilst I am using a Sat nav app.

After reading this thread I also downloaded Polar steps. I also found Esplorio.

I used Polar staps to record our journey from Home to Kirkwall most of which was on a ferry to be honest. The screenshot below shows what it recorded.

There are some definite erroneous points recorded here. If the previous post is correct that Polar Steps uses the cellar network for positioning then limited cellular network here may be the problem.

I used Esplorio to plot our trip home and there is a screenshot below -

This is a much better and certainly more accurate plot of our journey.

I'll probably carry on with both for a bit and see which works out best. I don;t suppose I'll get to see much till we get to go on a decent length trip.

Thanks for that Phil, I am downloading Esplorio now and will run it side by side with Polar Steps. Polar Steps is great for recording stops but the route info if you want it is definitely iffy at times. Take a look at this bit near Dundee yesterday, we only crossed once, stopped at Morrison’s for supplies then continued towards Aberdeen, we definitely were NOT stuck on a ferry:)

Yes, I know it is patently obvious that the bit in the middle has gone wrong and I suppose it isn't hurting anything, as the overall trip is recorded, but I just don't like it! Maybe I'm a bit OCD.

This is very interesting especially the erroneous journeys possible a plus if you were trying to cover your tracks!

Imported into Google maps
From an app called Geotracker
PS looks more suited to walking !
