Schengen Limits

Brexit evokes some strong emotions. Phil, and I think the site moderators do their best to avoid the sites becoming political in general, with such subjects confined to Current Affairs and Speakeasy. However, some consequences of Brexit are directly applicable to motorhomes and such subjects are left for discussion provided the thread does not get politically hijacked. Hopefully the balance is maintained between keeping the forums away from politics whilst allowing relevant motorhoming discussion.

I have very strong political views on a number of subjects, but when someone asks a legitimate motorhoming/travel question then if I wanted to answer the question I would try to do so without interjecting my opinions on the rights or wrongs of the current situation. Also, the Gov website has several items on the consequences of a "No Deal" Brexit for European travel, so there is information about what might happen in certain circumstances and therefore it is a sensible, non-political question.

I know it is very difficult not to make some remark about the pros/cons of Brexit in answering, but perhaps we should all try a little harder, and when someone does make a remark maybe we should just ignore it. There are plenty of other forums where Brexit can be discussed.

I've already left one forum where rudeness (especially from the forum Admin) seems to be normal. There seem to be few motorhome forums left which are both interesting, polite and well supported.

Okay, sorry I raised the thorny subject and obviously upset people. I crawl back under my rock and ignore the world
Just to add... there's nothing amiss with your original question Trundlebus.

As Haaamster and 2cv have said, the concern is political hijacking of genuine motorhome-related questions. Many such threads have been hijacked in the past by extremely robust and often offensive tit-for-tat exchanges purely about Brexit, which means the original questions get 'lost' in the skirmishes and no-one receives a helpful answer. Understandably, a lot of members have become battle weary.

This is maybe of interest regarding current and possible future arrangements for those travelling in the Schengen area who are from countries not requiring visas. LINK

I still don't see anything that currently restricts me from travelling Europe for say 6 months. Once ETIAS lands thats a different story.
Have you read this?:
"...anyone from a non-EU country has to apply for a visa - unless they are from a special list of 61 countries, which also includes the US, Japan and Australia.
Nationals from these 61 countries can travel within the EU's Schengen zone - the area where people can travel without border checks - for up to 90 days without a visa.
However, because of the migrant crisis and security concerns over terrorism, the EU has decided to bring in more controls over the countries on this special list.
So it is introducing the ETIAS..."
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46564884

and this:
"The visa 90/180 days rule means that the Schengen zone visitor or the Schengen visa holder can travel freely within the Schengen zone for a maximum stay of up to 90 days in any half year period. The 90/180 days rule means that once the visitor has spent a total of 90 days in the Schengen zone (either consecutively or separately) within any half year, he or she must leave the Schengen zone."
http://www.euro-dollar-currency.com/90_180_days_rule.htm

The message is clearly that non-EU citizens - whether or not they require a visa - can stay for a maximum of 90 days in a period of 180 days. So nothing to stop you staying for the period between now and a no-deal Brexit if it happens, plus a further 90 days if no visa is required thereafter. If a visa is required, you would probably have to leave the EU in order to apply for it. The current political vacuum means that no-one yet knows what happens after 29 March 2019.

yeh thats what i thought, not worried for another 2 years. Ok so 24 months to visit 28 countries

What you could do is suffer the paperwork, apply for a 9 month multiple entry French visa. Within the 9 month period you will be allowed to spend a total of 3 months in other Schengen countries. A bit of a faff though.

True
BUT it does not does not mean that the previous "rights" of others should be removed !
I do not forget.
Maybe you have forgotten the many members of this community who will be affected !

How could I possibly forget that, but it isn't a topic likely to up the table of concerns outside of this community.

There are I believe many pensioners and others living in Europe.
Spain in particular.

No mate, you stay out in the sunshine. It’s so sad that no one is allowed an opinion, if it differs from what is assumed to be the mainstream.
Political or not, it’s something we’re all going to have to live with.

Hmmm....we are in the "not working" but DO have a Moho fraternity !! I'm sure there are more of us than previously suggested ? We currently spend 4 months wintering abroad so we watch with interest....what will be will be !! Lets just wait and see. None of the above scenarios may happen.......Maja

I have studied this in detail as in the past our trips abroad are generally anything up to six months but never less than four. Those days are pretty much gone whatever happens thanks to Brexit. It is something motorhomers need to be aware of. As said above if there is a transition period everything will stay the same but if we leave on no deal these restrictions will be in effect from the end of March.

There is no getting around it that I can see apart from leaving to a none EU country for three months before returning to Schengen. Third country passports are checked and recorded in and out of Schengen and over stayers are indeed fined heavily (usually between €500 to €1000) and deported immediately and you may have trouble returning in the future if you are caught.

A few motorhomers I have discussed this with are talking about just winging it but I cannot see how they will get away with it. Firstly will any insurer offer you vehicle and medical insurance for more than 90 days in Europe post Brexit? Possibly but why would they offer you insurance cover over 90 days which will be the new legal limit and secondly I Cannot see how they would get away with it as eventually your going to have to exit and your passport will flag up your entry date and the fact that you have overstayed. Unless you can prove you left Schengen during that time your stuffed.

Yes I agree.. Hence my first post which was perceived as political.
Happy (European) Days are bereft of life etc etc
Also it appears you have to be out of Schengen for 3 months B4 returning..
Yes it may all change but only for the worse..
Yes my bottle is half-empty rather than half-full.
Also insurance companies will take all this into account and so if you "Wing it" you will probably be uninsured.
Those who complained about my earlier post PLEASE note !

Well !! Will Barry and Jaggy be right ? Watch this space LOL ? !! I wouldn't question the learned opinions of the two above but just hope the eventuality is a little sweeter !!! I still think there are many variables that could effect the final outcome of traveling in the EU...no deal...a better deal....article 50 being withdrawn/suspended.....a military coup... who knows eh !! Anyway, Christmas and New Year have bored me to death....glad when Brexit is back on the news every day LOL ? !! Oh, and if we are restricted to 90 days will make sure we're here in Spain for the freezing Jan/Feb time..
....hey ho..... Maja

Hello, even now if you leave the Uk for, over 3,months you are meant to deregister from your GP surgery. Many of you may have been winging this over the years, but it is far more likely to be policed in future.......

Sadly the plight of a few thousand motorhomers not being able to wander around Europe all summer or winter will not be on anyone's radar. The 90 day rule will of course effect many workers, students and other travellers but again, its just not being mentioned. The only way it can be avoided is either to not leave or leave but remain in the Single Market one of the conditions of which of course is free movement. At this moment in time both are still a possibility as we are no closer to knowing what the actual outcome will be than we were two and a half years ago. Its going to be an interesting January (well unless Chairman Maybe kicks the can down the road yet again). If there is a transition period and your planning that trip of a life time I would do it this year or next. If there isnt then its going to be 90 days.
