Supply change

Can I change the electrical door supply from the starter battery to the leisure battery or will it affect the central locking system. The reason being the starter battery runs down after a few days with continuous use not moving. Appreciate any knowledge for this problem. Thanks

In addition to changing the Vehicle Battery ['VB'], a great addition would be an Ablemail AMT12-2 Trickle Charger that works with just about any combination of battery types to use the Leisure Battery ['LB'] to trickle charge the VB so that the latter is always ready to go. The AMT12-2 also has inbuilt software to force the LB to charge the VB for 9 seconds in every 10 seconds. The Charger is not as expensive as a VB, and will extend the working life of the VB by virtue of it not becoming over discharged when the M/Home is not being used.

I wouldn't be convinced the vehicle battery is actually bad as an electric door does use a fair bit of power and if you are opening and closing the door frequently, that is a decent drain.
If you also have a tracker fitted and listen to the cab radio when parked up, further drains and depending on the vehicle, when you open the drivers cab door, that may power up the glow plugs, so another drain if you are popping in and out of the drivers side door a lot.

Having a way to maintain the starter battery whilst parked up is a good idea. There are a few options there you can use, but the best (IMO) is the Ablemail AMT12-2, and with this you can in effect use the power from the leisure battery to power that electric door as you were musing, but via the vehicle battery.

I see CathyLizzie returned today at 6.51pm which is brilliant.

Let's hope she/they return to tell us how they got on with the various suggestions, and with possibly a little more detail about the make of van, what they are powering, do they have solar, and what a "few days" means.

CathyLizzie, You may not know, but we have a sister site mostly for Wild Camping, but equally friendly and helpful.

Why not have a look?

Tom, you joined the same year as me and will have seen many people ask a question and immediately disappear, never to return. Its a fact of forums.

This is a friendly and helpful site, and so is the Wild Camping sister forum, and there's nothing wrong with a bit of additional humour and banter. 😀

I would tend to agree that there's nothing wrong with a bit of humour and banter between members who have some knowledge of each other. However, someone who joined two days ago and sees an apparently misogynistic comment referring to them (@CathyLizzie apparently visited at least once yesterday and again this morning) may not see it that way.

We have a Mercedes sprinter 22 registered made by RP of Leeds. We have 2 x 200 amp lifpro leisure batteries and 230 watt solar panels. 3 to 4 days off grid drains the starter battery using the electric door. My thoughts on this was to change the supply to the door from starter to leisure battery and would this affect my central locking. Or would a smaller solar panel would be an easier solution. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks Cathy Lizzie

Do you keep the electric sliding door open while parked up? That may cause a drain.

Have you contacted RP for advice?

Otherwise the advice to fit a trickle charger is your best bet. Someone on here will explain how to do it if you need help.

Merl built me a GizMott to keep the VB topped up from the LB, no EHU all winter and the VB had been fine, its basically a grown up version of Clive Motts link wire pos to pos and fused.
