3 Things you like - and dislike - about your Motorhome/Camper?

One of the US RV Channels I watch has this question on each RV they review and I thought it might be interesting what folk think about their vans :)

These would be mine on my Autotrail Cheyenne 635 ....

Things I dislike:
1 - No tall/long external storage locker. Consequence of the layout mainly.
2 - Limited Space for Solar on Roof. The curved dome Autotrail do on the roof takes away a lor of potential roof real estate for fitting solar
3 - Drivers Door Mirror. This is useless due to combo of Remis side blind, vertical window bar and driving position

Thing I like:

1 - Spacious Rear Bathroom. The rear bathroom with the decent sized Shower enclosure and a good space to move around and get dried & dressed is brilliant.
2 - Overhead Cab Bed. Having the space over the cab used as a bed allows what is effectively a fixed bed without it encroaching on the living space even when in use (unlike the current vogue for drop down beds over the lounge) and keeps the overall motorhome length shorter
3 - General Layout and the Freestanding table. So many motorhomes seem to have a fixed table that just gets in the way and if you unbolt that you have no table at all.

Overall, the likes are what made me buy this motorhome, and if 1 or 2 was not present I would not have bought it. (I was initially going to get an Autotrail Mohican, which would have had the identical likes and same dislikes. Maybe being longer, the roof dome would have been less of a limit, but still a dislike as would try and fill the roof with solar anyway ;) )

Of course, one persons likes and dislikes will be different to anothers, hence why there are so many different layouts and styles of Motorhomes, so what are YOUR dislikes and likes about YOUR Motorhome or Campervan?

Likes, big strong space warm panoramic window, inline engine, everything works as it should & good lights.
Bad bits, could do with more grunt up hills, night heater not working, front suspension very bouncy on bad roads, wont do 40mpg.

As some of you know my 'Millie' is a self built conversion on a perviously unloved 2008 LWB Renault Master. My plan had always been to do the conversion to the best of my ability and if we liked the campervan touring life we would sell her and buy either a brand new or nearly new van to convert........... Well we loved her so much then and still do to this very day that we still have her!

My loves are:-

1. The enormous rear storage shed.

2. Her comfort and luxury of fittings

3. The fact that I did all the work myself still brings a smile to my face.

My dislikes:-

1. I wish I had fitted a revolving passenger seat

And that is about it!

My loves are;

The rear lounge to take in views yet comfortably sit or watch tv.

The large bed.

The excellent build quality.

My dislikes are;

The tight entrance to the hab area from the cab.

The limited space for storage, especially now theres a mobility scooter to fit in.

The reluctance to move on wet grass.

My likes are:-
Bed converts to two singles
Large garage area
Remote control Diesel heater

Dislikes are:-
Not enough kitchen area workspace
Wet room as opposed to single shower cubicle
That bleedin bloke that sleeps in the opposite Single bed snoring his head off 😲 - ( just saying )

Likes
  1. The size it's just under 6m
  2. Lovely to drive plenty of power even for the 100
  3. It has almost all we would like, the two singles could do with being a few inches wider

Dislikes
  1. only takes 2x6kg gas
  2. silly double electric step, I much prefer the single electric step with an internal lower floor at the door.
  3. Grey waste tank scrapes each time I pull off the drive

Likes:
1 Only 5.99m so ideal for on street parking
2 Good level of equipment
3 Good Lounge space

Dislikes
1. Only 5.99m so everything quite neat for usable space
2. Drop down bed means '1 out all out' at 3am and a ladies 'Excuse me' to get past the Step and into the WC or the kitchen 'L' space whilst waiting for the WC
3. The Broom Cupboard instead of a Garage means space rather than logic dictates where kit is placed

Don't forget that you might/will also snore, mind you, just like most woman will do, you will deny that you ever do anything other than the quietest breathing......

Can you not add a swivel plate to the seat? usually pretty simple. make it perfect then!

likes only 3 ?
1/ drop down bed so huge social space 2 x 6 ft settees 2 x swivel seats
2/ swing wall in bathroom closes off loo gives a wet room
3/ new fridge freezer doors open both ways strip light etc

dislike
1/ pathetic dangerous oven shelf above my eyeline double all cooking times,
2/ plastic drawer catches had 6 broke so far luckily the upper lockers are self closing
3/ ??

Gave up on 2019.
After 20 years on the road.
Miss:
1)
The freedom and spontaneity of having a fully packed MH, 50 feet from in our home.
2)
A refuge from when visitors arrived. Or workmen , or the Earthquake cracked the roof, flooding the house.
3)
The absolute joy of the serendipity of taking off, not knowing where we'd sleep, or who we'd meet, before nightfall.
.....

Don't miss:
1)
The take over by huge great rigs + trailers by rich ignoramuses , looking to live for nothing, spoiling the best locations and annoying the locals.
2 )
The constant trouble shooting, regulation and threats of theives, looking for an easy victim.
3)
We suddenly found we can't spend our income, since no longer driving.
Van repairs, and hassles of replacement..

Since the car went, too, we rely on Uber cabs.
They've really improved their act.
We rarely spend more than £ 80 a month, and don't have any of the downside of car ownership.
But we still miss the lifestyle and the company of like minded nutcases.

1] Air suspension combined with air ride seats on tag axle thing sales down the rd like it’s on rails.
2] Big garage and Loads of underfloor storage.
3] Massive bedroom with a big comfortable bed.

1] Use of cheap plastic fittings
2] oven if you can call it that is too small.
3] it’s a full time job trying to keep it clean because of size.

………….

2017 Autotrail Comanche

Like
1) Seemingly unlimited payload
2) The internal space
3) Decent size comfy island bed

Dislike
1) Poor traction on wet grass
2) Gutless Euro 6 engine on hills
3) Poor mpg

Yes I could David, however I have short legs and the step down from the cab floor to the accommodation floor would leave my stumpies swinging in the air.
I did actually in my initial design stages include a section of extended cab height flooring, however this would be impossible to retro fit as the sofa/bed leg when pulled fully out needs the lower level floor to function as intended!

Ah, that can certainly be a downfall in a swivel plate with the extra height.
I fitted a pair in my VW T4 and the height raised wasn't too much of an issue for the legs, but ... The seat was raised enough to result in your eyeline being higher than the cab side windows. I actually took out the swivels and sold them on after a couple of months.

There are a couple of options if you really fancied swivels though .....
1) cut the metal base so it is lower and then the swivel will put it back to the original height? This is quite a popular method on the VWs actually and if you have or know someone who can use a welder it is a fairly simple thing to do.
2) get seats with an integrated swivel function. This will not add any height. This is the approach I took when I did my last conversion and fitted Ford Galaxy seats to my VW LT. Didn't have to do any mods to the seat base or seat itself at all and ended up with a pair of super comfortable seats with swivel, armrests, lumber adjustment and height adjustment for less than the cost of a single swivel plate.

Just throwing out some ideas there :)

Many of the factory stuff does, lots i have seen are poor build in my eyes.
They shouldn't build the motorhomes in your eyes, Trev; there's not enough room ... You sure it's not just a speck of dust? On the other hand, you could wash it out using the onboard shower instead of buying an eye bath., so you might save a few bob ... :ROFLMAO:
