Terry, it was Banchory Show today and as oldies do Sue and I got reminiscing about when we actually won a class with our sheep and had to parade in the parade of champions. This got us talking about when we lived in Eskbank then Pathhead and used to go to the Dalkeith Show back in the 70’s. We remember getting there via Lugton Brae but can’t work out where the showground was - all we can think is it is now part of the country park. Is this correct and where Is the showground these days?

Thanks, Tony

Hi Tony, we missed this year show due to us here in France. The show has always been within Duke of Buccleugh Estate, now known as Dalkeith Country Park. The large field is known as Westfield park. Show is still current, Tony, and always will! How did you fare way back then?

Edit: Westgate park, Tony, Google not playing and can’t add a link.

Tony, if you type 8 Lugton Brae into Google maps, the grey painted and slatted gate was the way in for many years. Fairly recently one off the gate pillars was destroyed by a large agricultural vehicle. These days all access is via the town gate. And I believe this year show held in the field in front of the palace. University of Wisconsin ceased the palace lease as covid descended on us. The Duke has big plans for the palace, no doubt with lottery funding, money goes to money!

Thanks for the update Terry. We had a trip round the Country Park recently (spoilt by Sue spending too much money in the Restoration Yard!) and just couldn’t work out where the show was held.
When we used to go we were simply aspiring “hobby farmers” so no animal showing for us at the Dalkeith show. It wasn’t until we got back from living in Norway then France for many years that we actually got some animals.

Wully, thanks for the park up hint and the location is noted (sorry Terry). May have to use it if our daughter in Penicuik gets fed up with us parking outside her house.

Certainly does not take long to spend a few ££££’s in Restoration Yard. The whole of the stable yard was fully restored, hence the name of course.
This particular Buccleugh Estate is now heavily commercialised, basically due to location and main routes access. I can access from my rear garden, I only do this now when Kings Gate are closed, which means less folks on the go.
I recently read since easing of covid, over 300,000 have visited the park.

I suppose it would have been 299,995 if we hadn’t gone with daughter, son in law and grand daughter from Penicuik the other Sunday!
The shops may be expensive but they’ve done a good job of restoring the stable yard.

Yes a grand job was done, roofs on both sides fully re-slated, new restaurant, cafe, then of course the various business’s within the yard. Prior to restoration, the area was in a sorry state.
A wee link to recent show https://www.dalkeithshow.com/

I took Wully on a mini tour, which included the park, right away he sniffed out the lead down pipes, I thought I would have to cuff him as his eyes started to roll 😳707BB618-4A43-4811-8E96-AABF21D7EFBA.jpeg
