I have a Hymer B598PL 2016 2.3L engine. We headed for France late May of 2024. Before we had travelled 50 miles enroute for ferry, I got the ABS light and an alarm from the tyre pressure monitor that I had fitted some years ago. The tyre pressure was fine but the temperature on the back right wheel was at about 70c if memory is correct. Burnt my fingers when I touched the rim. The other 3 wheels were all fine. Van serviced at start of year and a few weekend trips done. I always park at home with handbrake off, although on occasion the pads stick momentarily when moving after a park up for a while. I thought it would clear itself so we proceeded to the boat. The ABS light did not show during the rest of the 5 week trip.
The wheel was constantly hot for the next 5 weeks. We amended our plans and drove no more than an hour when we moved, closely watching the wheel temperature on the tpms, stayed longer on Aires than usual and remained in Brittany, to be close to the ferry. During the first fortnight I called at 3 Fiat professional garages, a small independent and a Motorhome dealer. None were prepared to even ‘look’ at the wheel. 3 weeks was quoted more than once before an appointment would be available. All I wanted to do was remove the wheel, look at the brakes and calliper and see if they could be freed. Ce ne pas possible monseiur.
On return home, my garage diagnosed a faulty ABS control unit. A very expensive replacement (circa £1000) as we were due to depart for France again about 5 weeks later and to obtain a cheaper reconditioned unit the faulty one would need to be sent off with no certainty of return date. Needless to say the wheel needed new pads, the only upside being that the disc was fine. After removing the old pads, which were almost at the rivets, a sharp tap on the ground caused what remained of the pad to fall off and break up.
Sorry to detail this tail of woe, but do check the wheel temperature during or after each leg of your trip. The subsequent September trip had no brake issues, just an alternator that run at excess voltage and fried the one year old Lead carbon habitation
battery. Fortunately the 8 year old starter
battery which was replaced in the January service as a precaution survived without issue. So new alternator and a Numax 110 amp sealed lead acid made 2024 an expensive year!
Hope you get an easy and cheap fix and enjoy the rest of your trip.
