Wow what a stunning location! As we track toward the Mediterranean, the medieval city of Carccassonne provides a glorious 24 hour pitstop. Join us for dinner at a Moroccan restaurant (OK it's a kebab shop), and head up to explore the ancient walled citadel. As France's No 2 tourist destination, the inner city was crowded and crazy, but walking around the lices we could easily imagine jousting knights! As we planned to explore rather than site back and relax, we picked a €15 per night automated Aire: Aire de camping car Carcassonne

We were there only a couple of weeks back. Stunning city. But the motorhome parking by the coach park was free until the end of July so we just scraped in. The only thing that put us off spending a lot of time in the citadel were the crowds ... and the carparks were no where near full!

We were there three weeks ago too! We found a parking space (SFS) beside the river Aude and cycled to the old town in five minutes. It was so hot, and crowded. The battlements were closed off so it was just the streets to explore, and a lovely three course set menu, our first meal out during Covid. We then took the van away to Limoux, which was extremely hot. We feared it would be hot and crowded of course as we’d normally have avoided peak summer and left in May.
Our 6 week trip took us to the Vendee and Isle de Re, the Lot valley, then Carcassonne, before heading for the Med, at Agde and along to the Camargue (pink flamingos), before heading north via the Pont du Gard, the Ceze, the Allier river, Moulins, the Loire, Seine and Somme. Fantastic locations with more big rivers and several lakes for swimming.
And now it’s Day 4 of quarantine, and tidying up the garden, no walks, cycle rides, shopping or family visits.... why can’t we be tested to show we’re clear, and healthy?

Could I ask you folks who have stayed at each aire (the Radfords aire and also the coach park aire), how long it took you to walk into the old city?

It is a long walk followed by a lot more walking. We cycled to the bottom of the castle then walked. But we felt safe on that Aire. The car parks are closer but we saw windows smashed. If your fit then go for it ...
