At the turn of the year my TomTom camper 1005 was basically bricked by a map update (along with many other people) after much faffing I did get it going again with limited maps but had lost confidence that it wouldn't let me down in the middle of somewhere I didn't know.
I had always relied totally on it and had been really pleased with it, so bit the bullet and bought their latest 6200, on the face of it a nice replacement, however the first instant dislike problem was, that unless you have a route entered into it your speed and time of day are not shown, also no live service as such. It has got some nice features though.

We've just done 6000Kms to Norway and back and the stupid thing has failed us several times, a few incidents of wanting us to make unnecessary detours whilst on a straightforward motorway route, but most annoying whilst on a 4-500K journey it has done what appeared to be a reboot only for it to then decide it has sent you off on the wrong motorway intersection, which it noticed 24 Km up the wrong way for it to then simply tell you to "make a u turn, turn around when possible".

So I've been looking at the Garmin units, can any owners of them give their views and especially the information as to whether or not the display shows speed and time when no route is planned.

I have recently purchased a Garmin 770 to replace an older Garmin Nuvi.
Its like chalk and cheese. The old one worked fine, but the new one is so much better.
Plus its got more facilities IE. Bluetooth, dimensions, phone link etc. It has so many options apart from putting the kettle on.
Yes, it was expensive but you pay for what you get.
Well chuffed.

You can tell very easily if it is showing a programmed route or is just a map.

You can choose from a host of infomation to display, including speed, time of day, direction, elevation, ETA, distance to destination, time to destination, etc, etc. (and speed, time of day, direction, elevation amd maybe more irrespective of if on a route ot not).
Personally I use the Speed (it also has the Speed Limit for the road where know shown next to it and the Time of Day mostly in terms of displayed info, plus when on a route, distance and either ETA or time to destination depending on requirements at the time.

I see no reason why any Sat-Nav cannot display both Time of Day and Speed always when it has Satellite Connection! It would be a poor system that didn't/couldn't do this.

We prefer TomTom and now just run the app on the phones! £14.99 a year for world maps, and that has al the traffic cameras, live (real time) traffic, and everything else. No need to buy dedicated hardware any more

(used faultlessly for Norway, Czech, UK, France, Germany etc etc - though in France cameras are called "safety zones").

I've always used Garmin and for whatever reason I decided to get a Tom Tom for the motorbike and it actually spoilt our first trip to France after 6 months of going back and forth with their support and finally an email to the CEO in Holland they agreed to give me a full refund even though I got it from an online shop! Went out and bought a new Garmin Zumo and never looked back. Yes the Garmin Camper shows your speed even without a route planned.

I have had a Garmin for 7 now and have been very pleased with it. I usually have it on even if I’m driving locally for the speedo as it always shows that. I’m afraid it does occasionally want to send you down some silly lane just because it cuts a couple of yards off the journey but not often. For some reason on the M25 when heading for Dartford crossing it wants to go off into Thurrock but I’m smarter now and tell it where to go. I like a sat nav as I struggle to see what is being displayed on the phone

I've got 2 Garmins for the van and the car. The van one, with dimensions, is very nearly 8 years old but still really reliable... except for a couple of blips in Europe last year when it chose a some odd routes. The newer one in the car does a few things slightly differently but is still easy to use and has never let me down. Even after all this time, I'm still finding useful features that I didn't know were there! Having said all that, our first satnav was an old TomTom One and was also reliable but I needed something much bigger for the van and the Garmin came up trumps because of the dimensions facility, which was hard to find at the time. I also switch it on sometimes without a route, to keep an eye on speed limits, etc... it still gives all the usual warnings without a route. You can choose what info you want to show on the navigation screen and it's very simple to switch from 'arrival time' to 'miles until destination' without going through umpteen menus. I don't actually think I've got the current time switched on to be honest... there's a clock on the instrument panel anyway, so I probably wouldn't use it. In future, I could see me using an app on a tablet but a phone would be much too small, plus the GPS on gizmos other than a dedicated satnav is nowhere near as good... IMHO :giggle:

Excellent, thanks to all for the information, I'll be going for the 770 then.

The latest TomTom does/will not show speed or time without a route, absolutely stupid as wildebus says.

Thanks everyone again.

I use a Garmin 760 Camper version for the MH and it is very good and very reliable. The MH itself has a TT which we use as a back up but that doesn't appear to have a Campsite Search facility, which the Garmin does. I can't remember about the speed/time thing but I think someone answered that above...

If I was replacing I'd definitely get the latest Garmin based on my experiences (and owning 3 or 4 TT's which are good sat nav's)

Have you frequently updated using mydrive connect?, the navcore software has been updated quite a few times, I have a Tomtom 6000 and if I don't select a route it still shows my speed, the speed restrictions 30/40/50/60/70 and speedcameras, I haven't looked to see if it shows the time but I will check the next time I use it

I think that model is the previous series, same as my earlier 1005, that needed my drive connect to update.
The 6200 is the latest series and has built in WIFI which is how the unit gets its updates

Sorry, I also have a Tomtom Camper which updates using WiFi, I have it in the van which has been off the road but now MOT'd so I will check it out in the next few days and post my findings

Take a look HERE. I have the previous model S6450 CC, bought some 5 years ago and still going strong. Will give you loads of info even when a route is not being followed. Includes traffic situations within about a 10 mile radius of your current location, speed of MH and speed limit on current road, warnings of bends and up/downhill %'s. Most important is the ability to input the vehicle size and weight and then when you are on a route it won't take you down a narrow road with a 1.5 tonne weight limit! Added to this is all the POI's and full details of campsites. No annual fees for updates unless you want current year's speedcamers. I can fully recommend this beast!

The Snooper Ventura is no good if you use WC POI's, they cannot be added to it

We have the Avtex tourer Garmin 760 and we've been entertained in the same way. Our snooper was not much better.
