Another sat nav query.

At the turn of the year my TomTom camper 1005 was basically bricked by a map update (along with many other people) after much faffing I did get it going again with limited maps but had lost confidence that it wouldn't let me down in the middle of somewhere I didn't know.
I had always relied totally on it and had been really pleased with it, so bit the bullet and bought their latest 6200, on the face of it a nice replacement, however the first instant dislike problem was, that unless you have a route entered into it your speed and time of day are not shown, also no live service as such. It has got some nice features though.

We've just done 6000Kms to Norway and back and the stupid thing has failed us several times, a few incidents of wanting us to make unnecessary detours whilst on a straightforward motorway route, but most annoying whilst on a 4-500K journey it has done what appeared to be a reboot only for it to then decide it has sent you off on the wrong motorway intersection, which it noticed 24 Km up the wrong way for it to then simply tell you to "make a u turn, turn around when possible".

So I've been looking at the Garmin units, can any owners of them give their views and especially the information as to whether or not the display shows speed and time when no route is planned.
I too have changed from the old tt 1005 to the new, I won’t bother listing the problems I’ve had, how have they managed to ruin what was a good unit.

My tomtom caravan and camper threw a fit just before our trip to France. The new one doesn't allow poi bitmaps to be loaded - a retrograde step if ever there was. I bit the bullet and bought a Garmin 770. What a disappointment. When I came across "Route Barre" I couldn't look at the map to spot a way round as it doesn't show full mapping. When I wanted to pick a poi in a certain location, even though it was loaded it didn't show up and I had to rely on my ipad to put in co-ordinates. The menu is "clunky" to say the least - and yesterday it started self-updating whilst I was driving an unknown route. Last night I managed to get the tomtom working again. What a relief. I'll probably buy a new TomTom when all the features have been put back properly and kiss the money for the Garmin goodbye.

I sympathise.
Do you think they will reinstate the missing features?
With my various contacts to them regarding my concerns, they appear to consider the latest ones an improvement

I have a Garmin 760 that I am thinking of selling. I don't need full European mapping, so let me know if you are interested.

You and I have exchanged posts on another forum (think ... Jumbo jet). ;)
