At the entrance to a local shop is the following rather attractive mosaic:

The current owner (and me!) would like to know what it says. The script looks Greek to me (only because several of the characters remind me of symbols used in science) but I'm happy to be corrected.
I'm wondering if the central object represents a pestle and mortar, in which case the shop may have been a pharmacy sometime in the past.
I've tried several on-line translation engines but have failed to get any meaningful output.
So over to the always helpful community........

Colin 🙂🙂🙂

Look like ancient Greek rather than modern so would transliterate to sympēgnymi which I believe roughly means to construct or put together. Quite how that fits with the symbols etc I don't know!

In modern Greek the ΜΠ combination would be used for the sound of the letter B.

Just taking the symbols literally, you have the signs for sex (male female) the sign for drugs (pestal and morta) and the waves around the edge suggest rocking and rolling as you travel along the line.

It's a music concert venue advetising sex, drugs and rock and roll.
Sex, drugs, rock and roll, and four for the price of three deal on sausage rolls 😬

I'm wondering if there's any more thoughts on the meaning of the mosaic word shown in post #1 ?
Personally I feel that Val54 (Dave) probably has the best suggestion to date with 'Welcome'.
Unless, having had time to think on the options, you know better?

I’ll ask Ari, the owner of the kafeneio by us, tomorrow ...
He has me sussed now ... as we walk in he asks me what my questions for the day are!

Thanks, Katherine.
It's appreciated.

Hello,

Detail from my Greek colleague (Yanny).

The writings are ancient Greek. There is the pot with the mixing spoon on left hand side. Then, of course, the male/female symbols.

He reckons it means blending or mixing, with the male/female mixed/blended together.

I hope this helps and close to the meaning?

Thanks very much for establishing that, Runnach. Please pass on my thanks to your colleague.
I'm hoping that Clunegapyears (Katherine) also manages to obtain some information for us.
Then I'll go back to the current shop owner and let him know what our community have found.
