pretty common I think. (I've been meaning to get round to fixing mine for over a year now! )

Check the fuse in the floor fuse box at the back of the drivers seat

Does it retract when you start the engine?

yes seems to retract
on engine start up just tried it 3 times all ok its just on the push button it fails

im going to order a new alarm switch and see if that will fix it

It could well be the push button of the switch. I have that set-up and the push button part itself was sticking, It moves independently to the switch which is behind it, managed to pop the button out, clean it from dust then pop it back in, it has worked fine ever since.
