Cantilever steps

I currently have a Thule electric slide out step on our van conversion but I fear it is on its last legs (no pun intended).

I am looking at possible replacements and considering manual rather than electric to keep it simple. I quite like the look of the cantilever ones (both Thule and Project 2000) but wonder how one goes about closing, or opening, them from inside the van.

I’d appreciate experiences anyone could share.
