Car Hire in Spain and CDW

I have heard that it is a good idea to take this out before leaving the UK and before renting a car in Spain.

Has anyone done this? Does it work out cheaper? Is it accepted by the rental companies?

I am only after a short term policy rather than an annual one.

We didn't hire last month when we were in Oropesa as the car hire firm they had info on wanted €86 for 1 day

but looking at some other companies at other sites we are considering for next year, the rates appear to be much more reasonable.

Don't know how long you are hiring for but i use https://www.zestcarrental.com/ for my car rentals , In the last 12 months i have hired 4 cars from them (Portugal,Lanzarotte, and Spain.).I do take out their extra insurance and found last year in Alicante it came in handy as there were a couple of marks on the car that were not there when i collected the car (beware supermarket parking as this is where i think the damages were done). As an example i have just done a 10 day hire from Alicante Airport for a trip to Torrevieja in April :- Rental price £46.09 top up insurance £30. They are also U.K based with a local call number. I did hire in Majorca in 2016 from Goldcar and did get ripped off so beware GOLDCAR.

Find a small garage that has cars for sale some will hire you a car over here it,s the car that has insurance for any driver last time we hired a car we paid 20 euros a day :Thumbs_Up_Hand_Sign

I have just booked a car for 15 days over Easter through www.doyouspain.com for 162 euros including a second driver.. The small print includes a charge of 14 euros for breakdown cover but a lot of the companies on the site charge 6 euros per day extra for breakdown so make sure you check the terms and conditions. The website was recommended by a friend who has property in Spain and he uses this website regularly.

I used another website for CDW insurance. It is www.reducemyexcess.co.uk and it cost about £40 last year for annual cover. (annual cover was only a few pounds more than single trip).. I rented from Avis last year and they charged me about £250 for a replacement tyre after a puncture but the CDW insurance reimbursed me in full.

I use carhireexcess.com, pay £30p.a. Covers up to £7500 in one or multiple claims and they are UK based. At £30 I thought single cover wasn’t worth it as that was about £20. It’s uo to you not the hirer if you wish to take their cover to not, they just sell it hard.

Make sure any car is unlimited mileage, as this can catch you out. We also have annual cover, it pays for itself on one car hire. Holiday Autos are our choice.

Brilliant, thanks. We are off to Lanzarote tomorrow and will be hiring a car for 2 weeks.

We only plan to hire for a couple/few days so a single use policy would probably work out cheapest for us.

Slightly off topic but may be of interest to some of our folk who go to the Canary Islands.

We always use this company https://autoreisen.com/car-hire/car-hire.php for car rental in the islands. On a 28 day trip we have this year payed €318 and that includes total cover including tyres and the underside of the car. That hasn't been tested by us and I think there'd be a few questions about driving on the unmade roads which are common on the islands, particularly Fuerteventura. They also don't bugger about with fuel charges.

Cheers

Another thing to check is the Fuel Policy , never had a problem with Zest always full to full or return with same amount .
But had an offer from Ryanair and it looks the same with https://www.doyouspain.com/formulario.asp?update=C34&id1=&dp=40&idioma=EN&id2=P ( who also use Goldcar the biggest crooks in the car hire business,) ( check out their reviews ) they both charge a fuel service charge .

Are these covered by annual excess insurance ? Do u get the same type of hire contract detailing the excess or is or much less formal?

How does claim work, do u have to provide copy of hire contract as well as repair invoice?

These garages have cars that they lend to clients when there cars are in for repair we have never had a problem with the ones we have found in the past not the same as the big boys that only hire cars they dont rip you of like many that do here

You pay and then claim it back.
I’ve just had to have a tyre on a hire car repaired. Before I did so I rang the annual insurance ... they wanted a copy of the hire agreement, the repair receipt and a copy of my credit card bill .... as it was, I didn’t bother as the repair was only €10.
