I got an e mail from Tom Tom about updating my carminat Tom Tom which is fitted to many Renault vans.

Following their instructions it worked fine, definitely worth doing if you have such a satnav.

It would have been interesting if one had been in the air at the time of signal loss.

It's easy to say Squawk VFR and keep going, but I can well imagine the tension in the cockpit.

Many years ago in Nigeria, Jos Control Tower turned off all their navigation aids to conserve their batteries during a power cut in the harmattan, and it was interesting returning over the desert. We dropped down and found a railway line that got us home. Then discussed the matter with the gentleman in the tower who'd switched everything off. :)

I updated one of those and apparently the message went away about needing an upgrade so I would assume it is a non-optional update? The website certainly implies it is a matter of "don't upgrade and it will stop working".
Can't see any reason NOT to upgrade.

One of my sat navs works fine and I did do the update, my older Tomtom one XL could not take the update as it was too old, but now it still works navigationally wise, but the clock does not work and so the ETA part does not work either.
