Hi All

We will be visiting France soon and will be using our Caxton card for the first time . What I want to know is can you use this card on the aires that charge for overnight and let you pay by card payment ? also this card says it does not charge for transactions abroad . I would welcome any feedback and experience of using this card . Thank you

I only use my caxton card for getting cash out of the money machines. For the uses you mention I use a Halifax Clarity credit card. No charges on it either. With a Caxton card you have to pay in advance by loading the card. With Halifax Clarity you pay in arrears.

Once you’ve loaded your card with euros you can just use it like a normal debit card with no charges I used it in the machine on a couple of aires last year worked fine and for taking cash from machines no charge but always use proper bank some in shops will charge just like there starting to do here I’ve been using mine for years I keep at least 3 currencies on it at any one time.

We us a sainsbury preloaded card...

Although we have the Halifax Clarity card, Halifax don't issue them anymore

If Halifax are not issuing the Clarity card, another charge free card to consider is Santander Zero. Unless they have stopped them as well. Nationwide Flexiaccount plus do charge free banking abroad, but that is a paid for account.

Been using the Caxton FX card for years now and it`s great. Use it just like you would your debit card over here ( chip & pin ).

Readily accepted when paying for day to day shopping, ATM withdrawals, aires, peage tolls, entrance fees etc. etc.

No fees when withdrawing from ATM`s means we only draw what we need i.e. 20 - 30 - 50 euros as we don`t keep loads of cash in the van.

Just make sure that if you are offered the choice that you pay in the local currency which is euros obviously in France.

I also believe that now it`s Mastercard backed it`s also accepted at the 24/24 automated fuel stations.

It used to be Visa backed and they wouldn`t accept it then so we got a Halifax Clarity card just to pay for fuel so we can fuel up when we want to and not have to rely on the little kiosks at the supermarkets being manned which in France is only for 1 hour every other thursday o_O

You can also get a contactless Caxton FX card now but there is a charge for it ( £5 ) unless you wait for your existing card to expire then you automatically get one when they renew it, ours only runs out next year so we`ll wait.

I only use mine for cash at atm’s. Tandem for purchases, getting a small cash back. Cos, every penny helps?.
I used my uk debit card in a French atm by mistake, cost a bloo8y fortune in charges. I’ll not do that again.

I used my Caxton card in France, Spain and Portugal during my visit in March. As previous post says don’t use for fuel as it can take a large deposit circa 100 Euro and also charge you for your fuel which can quickly use up any balance . It can take up to 21 days to clear. I had to call Caxton who were able to release the blocked funds as I could show that the related fuel transaction had already been posted. I learnt the hard way. Otherwise good for most other things except tolls.
