Driving through Slovenia

Can anyone provide any advice please?
We are planning to drive through Slovenia to get to Croatia. Daily (it lasts a week but we would use it for one day) motorway Vignette appears to be €30 for my VW Transporter but there are various comments on internet suggesting there is also the option of driving on non-toll roads to save the vignette cost.
Has anybody done the latter, if so would you recommend it, or is it just best to pay the cost and travel on the motorways?
Thanks
Graham

I've just come through Slovenia. It cost me €15 for a 7 day ticket. I have a coachbuilt 3.5t motorhome. Bought the ticket at the border crossing on the motorway near Trieste. Not worth the hastle to avoid the tolls, just get the ticket.

First time we spent 5 weeks in Slovenia and avoided motorways the whole time and therefore tolls. Since then, we’ve gone from Italy, through Slovenia to get to Croatia ... there is a nasty cobbled ramp in Trieste... we’ve found it twice and in the latest van aborted and paid for the toll ... just to drive a few miles on the motorway.
So, my answer is, it depends. Once in Slovenia, the main toll motorway runs east west and is easily avoided. Traffic is light and roads OK. If you’re near Trieste ... pay!

Depending on time available there is a fantastic route entering near Kranska Gora, over the mountains and down the Soca Valley to Bovec. Then via Tolmin, Osp entering Croatia over the hills near Buzet and heading to Austrian coast via Motavun. Slovenia is just too nice to whizz through on the motorway...probably nicer than Croatia.

We have decided to spend more time in Slovenia than originally planned. We will certainly take your suggestions into account when we finalise our plans.
Thanks again

Leaving Split, Croatia tomorrow. Heading up the coast and back into Slovenia. Prefer Slovenia to Croatia. Not as commercialised.
