EGR Valve blanking

Does anyone have any actual experience of blanking the EGR valve of a 2008 2.2 Peugeot=Puma engine. Why did you do it? What was the effect, if any?

I used to fit these on Mitsubishi 2.8 td's but have no experience of the Puma.

Yes, I know its illegal etc etc and many will want to express opinions but I am only interested in actual experience of doing this.

Thanks
K 😉

I had one blanked on a 2013 2.2 transit luton, caused nothing but problems so ended up having a new one fitted, whilst the idea of an egr is unnecessary, when its meant to have one and then doesnt it seems to affect the engine.

My son also had it done on his 2.0 ford kuga and it killed the engine and he scrapped it.

Also depends if you have the remap or not, some are fine, some are not, if you can then I would just get it professionally cleaned or replaced with the correct parts.

My van kept going into limp mode and I was told it was the ear, my non ford mechanic said just blank it off, it was never the same

Not experience of this engine, or of doing exactly this, but lots of experience of working on engines.

Over time they have got more and more complex, to the point that even mechanics don't really understand what is going on in there.

Generally they have good knowledge of what goes wrong and how to fix these common faults.

Some of them have good experience of the long term outcome, others not so much.

EGR valves have been giving problems for decades. Early ones could be blanked off fairly harmlessly, but more complex engines run nearer the limits.

My suggestion is that before making a structural change to how the engine works, you ask a garage (or ambulance) mechanic who has seen the long term effects of doing it on lots of vehicles, not to owners who may have done it once or twice.

Generally a blocking-up EGR is a sign of an issue elsewhere in the system. Hiding the symptoms of another defect rarely ends well.

I had an unusual problem with the egr on my van, when pulling away, or any time the engine was working hard it would whistle from the egr!! We used to call it the happy van cos it whistled wherever we went. Traced the whistle to the egr valve area by using a smoke test. When we removed the egr it split in half, so we had found the problem. We chose to fit a new egr, rather than blank it off, there was an immediate improvement in sound and performance, we no longer scare all the lambs in the fields. I liked to accelerate hard as I passed their fields and watched them run for their lifes. I was doing it to build up their leg muscles, so that my favourite, roast leg of lamb was bigger!

Just my opinion , change engine oil often ,deisels need to work hard , let the engine tick over befor turning of to let turbo slow down befor oil pressure drops , periodically give it an Italian de coke , any more tips?

The only thing the EGR Valve does is put your exhaust shit back through the engine that the engine doesn't need .

That's all it is intended to do, but the side effect is that all the carefully calculated fuel mixtures and various temperatures are affected, so the ECU has to allow for it.

Humidity can block the EGR Valve if the M/Home is left standing for a long time. The moisture mixes with the soot particles and makes a very efficacious glue. Cost me £142.85 to discover this, and a day's missed attendance at the Rolls Royce Club Rally in May 2025 ... :ROFLMAO:

My egr let me down so many times, I got fed up with saving the planet and took the plunge. I also had to have a remap to stop the dashboard light coming on, but just got back from a 5800 mile trip around Norway without any arguments from the egr valve.

I suspect that a long trip is the thing least likely to give any EGR issues.
Not in my case, it would go anywhere at anytime! On one occasion, I had just arrived home, and was manoeuvring into my drive. I pulled across the road to back in…… and she stopped. Would not start, and left me high and dry blocking the road. Some neighbours helped to push me, to clear the road and the AA was called, problem? EGR valve coked up again. Enough is enough!
