I know downloading and live streaming is all the rage now but does anyone have an external DVD player that they plug into their laptop via a USB?

If so could you please advise the make/model if it's been a good purchase?

I tried to use one on a Chromebook. It wouldn’t connect.
A laptop could be different.

Got around it by buying a freestanding CD player, to use when there’s no internet connection.
When there is, either Spotify or Amazon Music.

I have one I used on my Lenovo ThinkPad must be 10+ years ago. I'll try it on my current HP laptop and try playing a DVD in a while and let you know how it went.

I am sure there will be be ones around but it is for sure a dying requirement. (But I 100% understand why you would want this).

At the very least, you should be able to buy a regular DVD Drive with a SATA interface, put that in a external drive enclosure which will have a USB interface and get your result that way. Not as neat as a 'proper' Portable DVD Drive, but will do the job if a portable one is not available.
PS. it could also act as a backup device if the device is a rewritable DVD drive, so a possibly handy extra function there :)

We bought one around this time last year, Graham, to recover some stuff that I had copied to DVD [photos in the main]. The [failed] predecessor was an LG £25 special from Currys and the replacement was an ASUS for around £27. Works fine.

I've had a Samsung portable DVD writer model SE-208 for years with no problems. Very compact and light, plugs into USB port. Plays DVDs no problem. Probably discontinued by now, but plenty on fleabay

Thanks all

I've bought a stand alone one now. 20 quid and 'plug and play' so we can watch our DVD's in the MH more easily now. The built in one in the TV in the MH is temperamental.

Why not now burn all to pendrives, i have a little folding wallet which holds about 10 in it, saves power to and easy to store, also for recorded music played through the car radio via a usb player.

Trev. We had this conversation on the other forum and I think I replied..."No, no and thrice no!" :)

NO!

:D

We are still using an all in one DVD player. Had it for about 10 years and still works. But only in the workshop. Don't have TV in the van.
