Filling stations for hi-line motorhomes

I'm trying to plan a trip during which I'll need to refuel two or three times. The first filling station I thought of for the first refuelling stop has a 2.5 metre max clearance and my motorhome is 3.0 metres (Autotrail say 2.99m) high. For info, this is a supermarket and there doesn't seem to be any pumps for HGVs. Does anyone know of a database that gives max vehicle heights for filling stations? Thanks, Geoff

The tip of our ladder is at 3.170m. We enter slowly so if necessary we can tip it back a bit to reduce the height slightly. However every barrier or canopy we have encountered saying max 3m has proved to be quite a bit higher. I think they err on the side of caution with their signs.

We never had a problem in a Winnebago and they are 12 foot 6 inches or 3.8 metres, most filling station canopies are way over 3 metres.

I had an Autotrail Cheyenne 840 tag axle and never had a problem even with our local Tesco petrol station

We had a Frankia for 6 years which was 3.2m high with sat dome. In all that time and wherever we travelled extensively throughout U.K. and Europe we never had a problem with fuel stations. The only issue was our local Morrison’s fuel station in Banchory where we had to use the outer pumps as the canopy was a bit low (but still do-able) on the inner pumps.

I'd never even given this a second's thought to be honest... bit worrying really. I've never had a problem either in the best part of 7 years, so I guess it can't be a widespread issue. I'll make a point of looking at the height limits in fuel stations from now on, that's for sure.
Thanks for the heads up! :Tears_of_Joy_Emoji:

Never had a problem filling a 3m high van, but loads of problems in France with the width. The French seem to enjoy making the exit from the pumps a challenge with tight corners, very high kerbs & chicanes.

Thanks to all for the responses.

I suspect that my concerns are a little misplaced. I was going by a Google Streetview image of the filling station and Google had partially munged the height sign, so that it looked like " 2.5m / 11' 4" ". The image also looked like there wasn't much clearance for a hi-top panel van. Having run a calculator over the imperial measurement, 11' 4" is actually close to 3.5m -- so I should be OK there. That said, I'll be checking height signs to be sure they offer at least 3.1m / 10ft clearance to be on the safe side. Thanks again, Geoff

10ft clearance ?
Best to err on the side of caution :Smiling_Face_Emoji:

Some Carrefour fuel stations have limited width and tight corners/bends. So GREAT care needed.in those.........Never had a problem with height

Thanks for the warning. We're off to France later this year and haven't been outside UK since we converted from a trailer caravan, so that tip will come in handy.

That`s the only problem i`ve found in Europe, in particular near the kiosk where they tend to have the gas cylinder cages as well.

It`s not only Carrefour, the other supermarkets can be the same.

Not had a problem yet in our 3.2m Wiensberg MQH.

closest call was a 3.4m bridge which i didn't realise was so low the first time, the return trip was a shock when i realised I'd not noticed the height of the bridge!

Google is your friend here: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Weinsberg+MQH.

FWIW, when we were in France we encountered a few low bridges. These were all at roundabouts that had a "straight on" underpass so that traffic going straight on didn't have to negotiate the roundabout -- unless your vehicle was higher than a car. Trouble was that Nagging Nora (our sat-nav) directed us via the height restrictions even though I'd programmed it to route us for an HGV

I can't recall ever planning fuel stops, except when I worked for a company that used Shell fuel cards, and Shell stations are as rare as chicken teeth in Spain.

Only worries I have had so far is clearing getting out with overhang and tight turning from pump. If it looks too tight i just carry on, dont run on fumes and you should be okay
