  • I have posted this on the Wildcamping site, if anyone on here [Motorhomer] can advise, could you please respond on that site. Thank you.

  • Due to pigmentary glaucoma, predominately in my right eye, I need a trabeculectomy operation to relieve the pressure in my eyeball and to slow down the rate of ongoing blindness.

Due to the chronic state of the NHS the specialist has told me that there is a backlog of operations and the waiting time is months away before a date can be even set for my procedure.
My right eye has deteriorated in the six weeks from when I last saw the specialist, I therefore consider treatment a priority for me. It is a legal obligation for the specialist to inform DVLA which will mean I will lose my license to drive because both my eyes are affected, although only one eye requires so called "urgent treatment", their words not mine!

The purpose of this post is not for sympathy, it is for advice and it could be useful to other members.

    The nub of this post:

I came across this article, https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/going-abroad-for-treatment/what-is-the-s2-route/ and I am wondering if anybody has knowledge of this, in particular, has anyone, either yourself or someone you know, gone down this road, so to speak? The article is post covid so I assume it is still relevant?
However, what I find puzzling is that the NHS will not fund private health care in this country but if my understanding is correct, the NHS will fund 75% of care following the S2 funding route. Under certain circumstances the additional 25% could also be refunded.
The disparity between the two scenarios is utterly puzzling and borders on the nonsensical which is why I am seeking clarification. Any help/guidance/advice will be very much appreciated.

If I am correct, Switzerland would be my choice of operation and at 25% of cost it will almost certainly be cheaper than the estimated £6k -£8k it will cost in the UK

Besides. if they cock up the op Dignitas will only be a few miles away! 👨‍🦯
