Fuel cap won’t lock.

Topped up yesterday and noticed fuel cap would not lock, it is secure and won’t fall off, it just won’t lock.

I had a look at it today, gave it a good clean, removed internal rubber seal and gave a further clean, made no difference, in place and secure, won’t lock.

Anyone had same issue and managed a fix?

After oiling give it a few taps on the ground, the slides inside may have stuck, if worn or bent then its a new cap, make sure no one has been at it with intensions of nicking fuel, bits of wire etc stuck inside.

I had a similar problem with my water fill cap tried all the tricks too no avail so I got a new one off ebay I bought a black one as I liked the look of them and as I had recently replaced my hook up inlet with a black one they look OK together as they are close on the vans side, only problem with the water cap is that it now has a different key to lock it so I have drilled the new keys face so I know the water cap key from the lockers and door key so that works of course NO IT Does NOT as I often faff about trying to unlock one or the others with the wrong key, but a few choice words often help with this small glitch hee hee

I had another go at this, this afternoon. More silicon oil, which is all I have with me, then thrown cap off trees, still no worky 🥲

See images. When I hold white inner nylon part with one hand, then hold black outer part with lock in unlocked position, it spins and clicks when turning, key in and turn to lock, I can hear the lock click and I cannot turn as described above, unlock, I can turn as described above.

When I put it all back together and turn as we do after a refuel, then lock, NADA, Dan thing won’t lock. It seems to me, and I call turning left then right as X & Y axis, the inner white nylon is not engaging to lock in the Z axis (up and down )
Me thinks a new cap required ☹️

Yer a bad man Trev. 🤭

Do not use WD40 on lock mechanisms, it is not a lubricant and does more damage than good.

HA, stopped at Costco, Dartford for fuel top up, I’ve not bothered taking keys with me cap lock broken. Turned cap as normal to remove, wouldn’t come off, back to van for key, turned key and voila, cap unlocks.

I reckon the short journey from Folkestone to Dartford on p*sh potholed roads fixed the lock mechanism, shook everything back in place!!
Bizarre 🤷‍♂️

Use spray with teflon in it, rd dust and drying out makes the bits inside stick.

Wd40 down the lock barrel or if none use cooking oil same way terry it's worked for moi b4
hi guys . please DONT use wd40 where there is plastic had the same trouble with side door lockers WHAT a nightmare it was . the key wouldn't go in or come out turn to lock so unscrewed the back off the thetford door lockers springs jump out everywhere managed to get them back in place just used engine oil where the key goes in .cheyenne P.S i tried Thetford silicon lubricant just as bad its only for the cassette blade

Something I learned the hard way when I drove off with the water tank cap on the towbar frame:

I bought a new one and this time I put the key on the same keyring as the ignition key. It is then impossible to drive away if your ignition key is also on the towbar frame. ;)

We use cheapo olive oil on the cassette mechanism to avoid damaging the seal
