bizarrely a door mat - to go outside, stops the kids bringing all the grass and mud and sand (OK not all) coming in

Ah yes, a big sheet of that porous breathable groundsheet stuff was one of our first purchases. We ended up cutting it into lots of bits: doormat for the side door, for the back door, floor for the loo tent... under the awning... and the one we got is rubbery enough that it works as anti-slip matting in drawers too. We don't use it for that if it's still muddy, of course
