I am unable to install the latest map update, Garmin suggest I install a SD card. Before I buy has any one deleted all the foreign voices or maps they don't use to fee up memory space?

No. I have the 780 Camper SatNav x 2, and have never been able to download the map updates. My solution is to use 3 SD Cards (£7.99 each from Argos). Back up the device then insert a formatted SD Card and download the new map and associated software. Then go to the Backup file and reinstate the 'Favourites' campsites and Aires. Repeat for 2nd Garmin (Avtex) 780, leaving the SD Card in each device. Keep the 3rd SD Card, formatted, ready to start the next update ...

Bit of a faff, but it works first time, and is quite quick; far preferable to having the update crash after 3-5 hours using the (partially filled) SD Card, because the supposed temporary transfer of retained files to the laptop to create sufficient update space doesn't work

Wow, thanks Steve. Wasn't expecting it to be that awkward 😳

It does work, Mike, but it is a process I dread. Did the last update on early January, but couldn't find the spare SD Card. Bought a replacement (that's how I knew the price), got home, and then remembered that the SD Card was in the Passports Wallet ...

I find TomTom updates equally problematic. For limitations of size, I bought a new secondary SD card which does work, but also makes the unit incredibly slow to boot up each time I switch it on. (Yes, I tend to be impatient).

Updates via their software offer a range of choices that generally mean that I end up with less mapping.

I won't thank them for the update some time ago that "forgot" to mention that it also deleted every single "free" speed camera.

I have the Camper 660 from Garmin and I don't remember updates being anywhere as convoluted as Marchie has found on his Garmin 780.
I think from memory I did have to delete files I had no use for to free space but when I have got round to doing updates, it has worked.
I don't take much interest in making sure it is up to date, TBH, so can't recall which update was the last one I did. Might have a go tomorrow out of interest.
As far as using an SD card goes, they are very cheap so even if you did need to get one, not a biggy really?

I’ve a Camper760LMT had it for a number of years. Every time I need to update it I simply cable it to the PC and run the update(s) as necessary. No fuss, no worry. It does have a 8gb microSD card and it does it all. As said - no fuss.

I have a Garmin 770LMT Camper. On my last download, I recognised the SD card and asked if I wanted to run it from thereI said yes and it worked perfectly. With the cheap cost of SD cards now, I can't understand why you wouldn't have one. All of my POI's are on mine from various sites.

I had a Garmin nüvi that received ever larger updates, requiring addition of an SD card. Eventually, the updates exceeded the maximum SD card capacity that the unit would support and I had to limit the map coverage in order to be able to continue with updates. The final straw came when the updating software would no longer recognise the SD card. After a few updates using an extremely convoluted workaround, I recycled the unit and installed an Android head unit on which I installed CoPilot.

Thanks everyone, I have bought, formatted a 32GB class 10 card but no real improvement, it still hangs at about 8% install. Even tried an old Windows 7 laptop.
I have been in contact with Garmin, they have asked for screen grabs from the PC, I will post an update should it be resolved.

Garmin requested the log files from my PC, after they reviewed them they confirmed a fault.

They were extremely helpful and gave me this hidden reset command for the device. It could be of help to some on else?

As discussed, please try master resetting the device following the steps here. A master reset will erase all favorites and will restore your device to the default factory settings. To back up the favorites to the computer, see Backing up, Restoring, or Transferring Saved Data on Garmin Automotive Devices .

  1. Touch View Map
  2. Touch the Speed icon
  3. Touch and hold the speedometer for approximately 5 seconds
  4. Release your touch when the Diagnostics Page displays
  5. Touch Clear all user data
  6. Touch Yes when prompted to "Erase all user data?"

The story continues...
My son offered to look at the Sat Nav after I told him that Garmin confirmed a fault and said if the reset didn't work all they could do was a part exchange against a new one.
He connected it to his Mac computer and all worked ok!!!

Why Garmin confirmed the fault and why wouldn't a Windows 11 laptop install I don't know.
Will leave the next update for as long as possible :)

I would guess that as you were using Windows, that is what they checked.

On Mac it has always worked fine for me, with no data storage issues. But thanks for the reset instructions. Who knows it could always happen.
Main frustration for me is because of its vintage I can’t update without using computer.
