It's that time of year again folks!

Has anyone renewed recently and got an unexpected deal?

Do you find one company always provides a competitive price?

Are there insurers you would avoid?

We would want repatriation/roadside cover for the UK and Europe bearing in mind our unit is 8.7m long.

I have been with Comfort for years and always do a price comparison. They always come out on top but am happy to try elsewhere to (it's not as if I haven't got plenty of time on my hands!!)

Thanks in advance

Graham

Unless saving a lot..Stick with Comfort IMO
BUT If you don't ask you don't get.
And comfort may reduce to nearly match.
But Comfort breakdown is good and cheap ! ( I used then 2x lat year....No 1 in Switzerland with a puncture No 2 in Belgium with a starting fault.
No 1 they knew it was a puncture and just sent a small van
No 2 a full low-loader arrived in case....

Scenic Insurance (part of Swinton), I have been with them now for several years and have always been impressed that each year their prices have remained virtually the same, in fact this year my premium was dropped by £10!

As a self builder, when I originally spoke with them I was so impressed to be speaking with someone who actually had intelligence and understood not only all about motorhomes, but for me he actually understood and sympathised with the trials and tribulations associated with self building.

I too need to shop around for van Insurance, I have been with Comfort for many years but this year my premium increased by £40 , My van is currently Sorned and uninsured in my Garden , I am going to put it back on the road for July if things change ref Covid, I am going to try AIB as on Wildcamping folks are saying they are good, no mention of them on this Forum strangely, so we shall see , I have always had good service from Comfort however.

Caravan Gaurd for last 3 years for me.
Always do the usual internet trawl every year but they are always competitive and within £10-£20 of nearest quote so not worth the hassle of changing.

Something that I think is worth bearing in mind is how any total loss payment is calculated for a self-build camper/motorhome.

For the regular "off-the-shelf" motorhomes, a valuation is fairly straightforward to come up with, but every self-build tends to be different of course.
When taking out insurance, it is worth checking on what basis any valuation will be made (bearing in mind the vehicle may not be able to be inspected at the time of a claim).
I took out my insurance with A-Plan (used them for years in fact) and have an up-front agreed valuation for my van (provided details of installed items and their costs, plus photos of exterior and interior).

Another question that would be worth asking if you are retired or full timing and not working. If you received a personal injury would you be compensated and on what basis? if based on loss of income you'd get nothing. I was unable to work for over a year and as I didn't take a wage I didn't get paid. Still I lost over £1k in lost production. Fortunately I had someone to look after me.

It is for that exact reason Dave that every year we reach another agreed valuation which is quite simple to do.
In my case I have an already prepared document that has 12 images contained in it with suitable descriptions, if there have been any changes then I update the document each year plus of course giving them the latest mileage.

I do exactly the same thing every year with my (almost) classic car.

Comfort is still my preferred option, Graham. I renewed a couple of weeks ago. They're not the cheapest but I want the no-hassle option should I need to claim (Comfort are Aviva's main broker in the UK). I also want unlimited mileage so I don't wonder if I'm about to exceed any previously agreed annual mileage limit.

Colin 🙂🙂🙂

Yes mine has gone up £30 for no apparent reason as well.

I'll do some comparisons when I get less time!

The recovery is a big thing for us for piece of mind so that may weed out some of the runners

Thanks all

Graham

That won’t have anything to do with your insurance, that will be a claim against the other party if responsible so will be as good as the solicitor u engage to pursue your uninsured loss claim.

take comfort in it, and be happy, oh no. u could try adrian fluk, but dont get your feet wet. dip your bread in, ok.pj. p.s. not moving yet

Also we need to remember how various companies, not just insurance, have acted during the Virus.

We were locked down in Morocco after our 3 month Green Card had expired.

Comfort renewed it for another month for free.........................although it had cost £250 in the first place.

Yes I know other companies offer cheap/free Green Cards for Morocco BUT their quotes were more than Comfort and the £250 Green Card
combined.

I only paid £17 for a green card with Comfort for Morocco, some years ago, or am I miss understanding you post ? I also obtained a green card for our trip to Spain / Portugal for our recent trip Nov 19 till April 20 this year, free, I got it just in case it was needed as some said it would be ?

Aib look after me, would highly recommend.
But having said that it's always worth getting other quotes to squeeze the price down a bit.

Safeguard for me, been round the houses so to speak with virtually all the others using the " new customer discount deals " but generally found that they whack the price right upon renewal and were not interested in the slightest in trying to reduce it so i`ve always gone back to Safeguard.

Probably the worst was Caravan Guard who refused to even offer me a quote because i had a " Performance Enhancing Modification " fitted to it o_O

The young child / work experience operative i spoke to had no idea what " Air Suspension " was when he asked if anything had been added to the motorhome, yes i know it`s actually " Air Assist Suspension " but we don`t need to go there arguing the pros and cons of both systems.

He went away for what seemed like an age and came back saying his manager said they could not offer a quote because they do not insure " Hot Rods and Souped Up Custom Vehicles ".

I tried to explain but he couldn`t / wouldn`t understand saying i needed a specialist company for it, i didn`t respond and just put the phone down.

Thankfully i`ve never had to call on Safeguard`s services but the father-in-law has twice and they were excellent getting it sorted / repaired very quick.

Granted they`re are not the cheapest but the all in package, i.e. 365 day euro cover with full breakdown included did it for for.

And that is why I so like insuring with https://www.scenicinsurance.co.uk/ as the people I have spoken to there appear to understand and know what they are talking about and what is more, their prices are good and without the stupid price increases year after year

I'm with staiveley head and have been for the past 8 years. £180 this year. I have never had an a issue with them
