My first trip

Hi folks,

I'm picking up my first motorhome next week. I can't wait to use it when restrictions have been lifted.
I was wondering where my first trip should be. Only for a night or two to start with, not to get use to driving the vehicle, but the whole "campervan experience".
I've been camping and I had a small caravan some 30 years ago. A motorhome is something completely different to the wife and me.

Is it a good idea to book into an established caravan park first before going Wild Camping?

I expect you'll all say stay local, an area you know and feel safe in. Is there anything I might end up learning the hard way, which can be pointed out here beforehand.

All advice gratefully received.

Couple of nights on your drive is always a good place to start, pack your motorhome then stay in it outside your door. That way if you have any issues or forget to pack something you're at home and its easy to sort out. Only place you can stay just now anyway, so take advantage & get to know your new van...😀

Totally agree..
20 years ago, we didn't have such sensible advice..
We rolled off. Had a superb evening with relatives.. parked in their paddock,.
They had showed us how to level the van, and wished us a drunken goodnight.
7 minutes later, we were knocking on their door...
We'd forgotten to bring towels and a toilet roll..!

Well...as from next week we are off for day trips in the Moho...no overnights yet though (oh, having said that we will overnight at a relatives farm) ....no wilding or sites yet LOL 🤗 However, Mrtorchy, take it for a run and get used to how it feels.....just avoid Barnard Castle....Maja

We used to live in Cambridgeshire.

After a night on your drive, and as it's your first van I'd suggest somewhere where help is available. It depends on your taste and interests, but we rather liked Ashridge Farm (Caravan & Motorhome Club).

Ashwell, a 5 minute walk, is a lovely small town with some great pubs, assuming it's safe to visit. Loads of walking if pubs remain closed.
.

Good plan, a good chance to check everything works ok, including the awning, and familiarise yourselves with the van.
When you make your first cuppa in there, you will probably sit and choose a name for her.

A night on my drive would have me rolling out of bed.

Talking of trips. I had intended leaving for a trip to Italy this weekend. I know there’s a few reasons why I can’t go. One is I’ve SORN the van, can’t remember the other 19. 🥺😤

Isn't that staying away overnight? A definite no-no

Hiya Moonshadow, oh aye....maybe we'll have to wait a bit longer before overnighting even at the farm !! Wish you would come to our road and say a "definite no-no" to all our neighbors who regularly have sons, daughters, boyfriends or girlfriends overnighting every weekend throughout the entire lockdown !!! Maja

We have the same problem here...the obviously haven't been introduced to Mr Covid yet!

Can imagine !! Anyway, were doing a day trip in the car to the farm on Tuesday...various letters have been sent to MP's regarding sensible, self contained, overnights in Mohos so we'll see. Mark

Couple of nights on the drive to get used to everything then maybe a couple of nights on a campsite when they open. We have stayed at Cabbage Moor CMC a few times. It’s not too far from Trumpington Park and Ride.

Unfortunately, you can’t do what we did, at the moment, when we bought our new van 18 months ago.
Picked it up Saturday afternoon, set off Sunday morning on a 2000 mile trip!

I am taking an unexpected trip to Kent tomorrow and will be staying overnight (two nights probably!) As an emergency, mum in law has ended up with her right arm in plaster for six weeks. At nearly 90yrs she didn't feel she could ask my brother in law to help her with undressing and the many other things she cannot do. Finally told me she has been sleeping in and wearing the same clothes for two nights since she fell, eating standing in the kitchen as can't carry food & hold walking stick at once! Brother in law really was unaware and took her word for it she is fine! Men!
So leaving my very forgetful mum with husband, ( he who had a seizure and waiting neurologist appointment) and praying nothing else happens while I am not there!
Not the first trip away I had planned!
