The gearbox on my Peugeot 2.2 has problems in 3,4,5 and 6th there is a really loud whirring noise in each although 1st and 2nd are fine. This happened a few days ago so we are heading home, gently. The camper has only done 17k even though it’s six years old but I suspect a new or rebuilt these box will be needed. Has anyone had similar issues and does anyone recommender a particular repairer. I also wonder if the same issue applies with Fiat vehicles. I did call into a garage for advice and was told “they’re notorious for it. Not sure if the guy meant Peugeot or all Sevel based vehicles.

It might be better to check the gearbox oil level first before major damage occurs. Get under and check for oil leaks, a pint of gear oil might save you a fortune.

I have a Peugeot motorhome on a Boxer and something similar happened to us in Italy in 20019. We broke down and the vehicle had to be repatriated to the Uk. A new gear box had to be fitted, and the problem turned out to be, water in the gearbox. It turns out that a spindle going into the box corrodes and the seal gets damaged allowing water to track down the spindle. My advice would be to get it checked ASAP, you may just have had an advance warning of a more serious and costly problem.

Thanks but I think it sounded like a box of nuts and bolts before it siezed and there are no oil leaks that I can see.

I replace my gearbox a year or so as it was making a right old noise in first and sec9nd gear I ended up getting a gear box from Germany with 3 year warranty it was I think 930 quid exchange they dropped it of at my mates garage and then pick the old one as well so I was well pleased

Odd, the old 2.8 vans had gearbox problems, and the earlier post 07 vans had the juddergate issue in reverse, moreso up hill, but I've not seen anything on any of the forums about problematic gearboxes on any of the sevel vans.

My mate just had to have a recon gearbox fitted o his Transit Luton, had a new clutch at the same time and it came in at £1800, that was at a gearbox specialist(?) in Sailsbury. I know its a different manufacturer but that's a massive price difference. Did you do it yourself Geoff or is that at your mates garage?

I would guess that would be Gearlink, they're at Alderbury, a village just outside Salisbury. I would recommend them, I had a recon box fitted there when I Iost 5th gear. I think it was just over £1000.

Don't know who it was but service was excellent, took it in one day, they looked at it the next and he had it back the day after at closing time. I know he was having recon gearbox, new clutch and if it has slave cylinder in there it was being done as well. Its probably got the double in price since covid factor added to it
