Planning this years trip...

I find planning a real nightmare.

I am trying to determine the relative costs as we have two options.

Option A, a week in Scotland wandering around our usual haunts starting over Aberdeen way, then across to Belfast and down the coast to the west Dublin, then meander through the inland down to Cork, catch the ferry to Roscoff, then turn left, wander down through Belgium, Luxemburg, Switzerland and around France coming back via Calais, no fixed agenda as we just go with the flow, but cost is an issue.

Option B, forget the Scotland and Ireland part and just head for Calais.

My health is pretty crap so I may not want to go outside the mainland again, I'm already not walking and I don't know how long before I can't drive the van.

Cheapest option is possibly DFDS Newhaven to Dieppe, booked by phone to get 20% discount off both ferry and cabin, for the 23:00 sailing, landing at about 05:30 CET. Reduces the mileage from Calais (and the potential aggro with extra passengers), and you can get clear of Rouen well before the morning Rush Hour. Lots of free Aires on both West Coast and Eastern France routes (East is quite a bit cheaper for budget holidays, and there is lots of history 'on the doorstep' for the eastern Aires, with mobility scooter access as easy as this type of mobility can be. I managed to destroy my phone in 2022 on the Eastern France trip (and hadn't backed up the photos), so we will repeat the tour at some stage. It's a rewarding trip.

I know you don't believe in hanging about, Kev, but Option A is a lot to pack into a week.

This time of year Aberdeen is wet and dull so in my humble opinion go for opt 2.

Well observed, Option A would be 8 weeks which Liz is against on many counts. Option B is what we did last year.

We don't mind the wet up in Scotland TBH, and It'd be in April so not too wintry.

We head for the brightest part of the sky and mostly that seems to work, the only thing neither of us like is camping exposed to the wind.

Definitely option 2. It may be the case that you won't leave the mainland again, but with your current health problems, I would head for Newhaven and across to Dieppe as marchie has already said. It is less stressed and quite pleasant to have a short sea cruise (even if you sleep through it) You can still head north/east to Belgium if the fancy takes, but it gives a great jump off point to visit the west coast of France and then across country to maybe Sedan or Charleville Meziere in Eastern France and into Belgium and beyond. Both Charleville and Sedan have very good CCP sites and the towns are lovely, Best of all, both sites can accommodate mobility scooters as they are hard standings

But whatever you decide (if 'er indoors say option two....) make it count. Take the full allowance and strike out.

Yeah that's an option, but France is not the destination but the route back to blighty, nothing written in stone yet.

We're just going to meander down to Dover, then do Scotland & hopefully Ireland September time, we're a bit strapped after getting a new car.
