Putting some petrol in your diesel tank ?

I have read (on this forum) it is an idea to put some petrol in every so often ( 1 gallon in a tankful of diesel)
The engine will burn hotter and maybe clean it out a bit.
Reading about the difference between diesel and paraffin it seems paraffin would have the same effect.
Although it is probably illegal due to Fuel tax reasons

It seems the difference between diesel and paraffin is similar to differing octane ratings in petrol but maybe more extreme ?

Maybe a good idea to put some petrol in your diesel before an MOT give the engine a good hot journey to avoid emissions problems

In some ways similar to StreetSleepers MOT problem BUT I DO REALISE his is a petrol engine

I don’t think the modern engines are all up for it I’d be carful with that one as not all fuel pumps and injection systems are the same and it could damage the fuel pump by drying it out damaging the seals. Think if you put some in as a mistake then you have to run with it but I wouldn’t just put petrol in.I have heard of it in larger trucks with the old diesel that was like treacle with few additives.

On old Landies and other 4x4's I have had in the past it was common practice to add low ash mineral two stroke oil to the diesel to lubricate MECHANICAL fuel pumps etc. All sorts of claims made but generally thought to be helpful.
Snake oil is better of course if you can find it.
K ;)

Might be safer to just buy the occasional tank of premium diesel with safe additives.
This is wise advice :)

Another - or additional, depending on personal preference - option is to use an additive to each tankful. When I ran a VW T4 on Veggie Oil, I also added in 'Diesel Rhino', an additive developed by a chap who also developed replacement injectors for the VW Engines.
Adding at a ratio of just 1/1000 (so 1ml for each litre of fuel), it is a very cost effective additive and meant to have a similar effect to the premium diesel. (FWIW, I try and use the Kirkland Premium Diesel from Costco whenever possible as it is cheaper then standard diesel elsewhere).

I used to put 200 ml of semi synthetic 2 Stroke Oil into my tank when I had the 2.8JTD engine.

My old vectra (2005) drove bloody brill on the premium diesel. Even the gearbox seemed smoother. Defo worth the extra for an older diesel engine imo x

Dont put petrol in new electric injection engines as it was used years back on old type engines when there was no such thing as winter derv, parafin has no oil in it to lube but runs clean,28 sec has sum lub but all illegal to use, best is some of after market injector cleaner/lub like STP.

I accidently put about 7ltrs of petrol in my tank (Fiat 2.8JTD) in France a few years back, fortunately I noticed and stopped the pump but remembering my days driving older diesels when we put a bit of petrol in when it was cold (as Trev said) I didn't panic and put in 60ltrs of derv, the engine ran smoother than it had done for a long time
