Renting out your MH?

Done some searching, but can't find if this has been discussed already.

Has anyone here entered into the field of renting out their MH?

Now I'm back from travels, gainfully employed, and looking to find a semi-permanent residence, the van is sitting idle. I'll very likely still use it for the occasional weekend, but it seems silly to have a highly valuable asset sitting doing nothing.

I've found several online services who will act as proxy for renting - sites like https://yescapa.co.uk, https://goboony.co.uk, https://uk.outdoorsy.com, https://www.shareacamper.com/, https://privatemotorhomerental.com/, which all seem to be run on the AirBnB model.

Essentially - I'm looking to see if anyone else here does this, and what experiences have you had? How easy/hard is it to manage the rentals, are the renters generally trustworthy? What horror stories do you have?!

:)

Nightmare IMHO
Breakdowns Damage Accidents Wear & tear
Insurance Loading
Parking fines Speeding Fines

Do not do it or your highly valuable asset will simply diminish rapidly as well !

I have done 3 swaps and they were mainly OK
2 from NZ owners both good
1 from Aussie ..Wrecked the awning ..Paid up but the inconvenience and hassle !!!!
They were all motorhome regulars
Let a novice drive you assett and mess up the habitation area get tree scratches on the side-walls and windows OhNo (X several)
Maybe even rip off a window or rooflight.

I am sure you will have got my viewpoint.
I expect many others will concur !!

But we will see !

A place in Glasgow who have done some work for me rent out a fleet. They say that it is only viable because they have a fleet and repair facilities, as the vans are often returned quite badly damaged.

When we where looking to buy a van we went to see several x rental vans 3 - 4 yrs old and they where more like 10+ yrs old they,d had a rough life. So I wouldn,t consider letting any body use mine

Interestingly - ours is an ex-rental, 18 months old when we bought it, and was in pretty good condition when we picked it up. Nothing broken, one or two minor stains, but that was all.

I wouldn’t rent mine out. That’s why I do all my own repairs so even the garage don’t drive it and I stand and watch it when the MOT is done. As for letting it out of my site with some one else driving..... no chance. But that is just me and mine is not worth anything near what some are worth. My motto is if you don’t want to give it away don’t lend it out.

You are braver or dafter ( delete as appropriate ) than me because hell will freeze over before we`d rent ours out o_O

Once seen a brand new 60k rental motorhome getting written off before it even left the hire company’s premises. Seen two hire vans this weekend traveling together getting totally abused must have been over occupied it was like the pink panther show they opened the door and 10 minutes later new people kept coming out must have been double the amount of people for those vans. What do they care only cost them about £500

When we were travelling up Scotland last year we saw some new rental MH’s with there windows, wing mirrors, bumpers one of the windows had tape all over it and the list goes on that had been taped ours isn’t a new one it’s 18 year old and I still wouldn’t rent it out!

There was an article in the i newspaper at the weekend about exactly this topic. It was extolling the virtues of :

Here is a link to the web version of the article. https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/money/camplify-caravan-holidays-rent-vehicles-airbnb/

I do not think it was written by a motorhomer, probably a finance type journalist.
