I've used undershield with added waxoyl on the underside of wooden floors before without any problems.

Hi the course of action you suggest sounds well thought out. If bone dry you could brush on a two part epoxy on the underside. This is often used in marine applications to weatherproof wood in bilge areas of boats and might give you a very robust repair. Bone dry clean surfaces best.
