RIP the Drove Stonehenge

It looks like they have finally shut the drove, the 303 end has steel gates behind them are huge concrete blocks so they cannot be opened and at Larkhill end they have blocked it with rusty old farm machinery not sure how permanent they are but time will tell.
It is a sad day if it is permanent the caravan that was a semi permanent feature of the Drove is now pitched up at Woodhenge so it looks like the authorities have had a clear out. ???

Haha look what was passed to me on facebook

Just an update.

Experimental Traffic Regulation Order Stonehenge (ETRO)

Wiltshire Council made an Experimental Order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act of 1984 on 26 June 2018 for various Byways and Footpaths at:

Amesbury
Berwick St James
Durrington
Wilsford Cum Lake
Woodford
This Order will have a maximum duration of eighteen months during which time consideration will be given to introducing a permanent Order. The effect of the Experimental Order will be to introduce a prohibition of driving for motor vehicles except for access including:

Agricultural vehicles
Essential maintenance vehicles
Emergency vehicles
Vehicles associated with the security and operation of the World Heritage Site
Vehicles associated with works and maintenance in connection with the A303
Landowners and tenants and invalid carriages
on the complete lengths of :

Amesbury Byway 11 and Byway 12
Berwick St James Byway 11
Durrington Byway 10
Wilsford Cum Lake Byway 1, Byway 2 and Footpath 3
Woodford Byway 16
Wiltshire Council will be considering in due course whether the provisions of the Experimental Order should be continued in force indefinitely.

Annie your sorted, your van is just a big invalid carriage.

I thought it was an ancient right of way, and as such, they couldn't do what they are planning, or is it just a David and Goliath situation?

If you are in the area, they have just allowed overnight parking/ sleeping for motorhomes in a car park in Amesbury for a small fee. Make sure you get the correct one though as the council car parks do not allow overnights. The one you want is in Church St. OK you do not wake up to a view of the stones but it is handy if you want to have a night in the small town.

Ancient rights is for animal movement and not for vehicles they have closed it to vehicles only if you read the whole thing.

We thought we would visit Stonehenge a couple of weeks ago while passing through the area.
Pah, no chance.
You have to park a mile and a half away and get a shuttle bus to the stones. Entry is by timed ticket only and advance booking is recommended. Oh, and you can’t take dogs on the shuttle bus, stone circle or monument field.

So, we went to Avebury instead, complete with dog.

The last time we went to Stonehenge you could park in a car park over the road and walk to the stones, which were roped off and you had to walk along a designated footpath.

Every time before, you could park next to the stones and walk around them with no restrictions.

We won’t be going again.

What a shame. It was the only Wildcamping get together we went to as it was close to home. No more videoing of the Equinoxes.

I couldn't agree more Nigel.
I feel sorry for my grandchildren as they have been robbed of part of their heritage.
One by one our heritage sights are beening taken, sanitized and turned into money making theme parks.
