Routes to Spain in winter with campsites that are open

Hi

This year we travelled down to Spain via the western route through France (Calais - Pont Authou - Poitiers - Bordeaux - St Jean de Luz) however next year we would like to try a more direct route through France if possible and crossing into Spain near Perpignon.

Do any of you folks have experience/details of a different route through France in winter, with campsites that are open and with hard standing?

Thanks

I check the route daily for snow and adjust accordingly ( I try to avoid tolls and often motorways preferring the interest rather than fastest )
ACSI campsites winter opening and discounts are your best bet, get the books from Vicariousbooks.co.uk but beware they run January to December so if you need the 2019 books it hard to get them before mid December .
We've never had any problems useing Aires in winter BUT the water may be turned off so fill up when ever you can.

Thanks

Do you have any sites that you can recommend?

I am already an ACSI subscriber although I get them direct from ACSI - cheaper and arrive at the same time.

Just a thunk, Ask the price first before admitting to being a member of ACSI. We found in Portugal a couple of years ago that the winter rate on some sites was cheaper than the discounted ACSI rate which was based on the higher season charges. Like I said, just a thunk, but the difference was quite substantial and in Spain to. We stopped above Granada to visit the Alhambra and the off season price was nearly half the Acsi members price. The upshot is---ask the price and then ask the ACSI one

Orbiter campsites in Portugal have some good offers, some people stay for several months though we prefer to move around as the mood takes us. Aires vary in size and quality.

Have you considered using the direct ferry to Bilbao or Santander saves all the hassel of France in winter. When you leave the ferry you can be well down across Spain in a days drive

The route I used to use was one learned from truck drivers and went the western route, more toll-free motorways, and it took us three days from Calais to Bennicasim, used aires along the way and enjoyed the run. I did once stretch a piece of string on a globe, between Calais and Benni, and the western route was the shortest!
