Hi folks, can someone tell me, is it easier, in terms of terrain, to head towards the northern coast and then down the coast road or just travel inland via Madrid?
Oh, and any suggestions for Aires along the way?

The Madrid option is easiest santander to Burgos direct best or via Bilbao and pay motorway.around Madrid the outer ring road is easiest M45 I think.leaving this there is peage road or normal main road which is fine.straight on fork left you are there..allow 12hrs.there are few Aires but lots of service stations.dont chose within 50 miles of Madrid and go off motorway where there are restraunts and lorry parks.watch out for opportunist thiefs I have seen 2 helpful !! Incidents close to Madrid and Bilbao. admittedly in 20years..bon voyage.

We sometimes go from Bilbao to Navajas just north of Valencia and Google Maps suggests the same route from Santander: Route There's no major difficulties. That way you avoid the high pass just north of Madrid (Somosierra) which can get snow. Even the outer ring road round Madrid (M50) can be a bit busy. Depending what time you arrive in Santander, you might want to find an aire fairly soon. Or if you can get to Vitoria, just a bit off the route, there's a decent aire in the town in a large car park, a super baker just across the road and plenty of other shops nearby as well as a park for a dog walk (if you have one).
