Sat Nag, stand alone or phone/tablet app what to do you use.

I have a few old Tomtom sat nags, but find I keep em as back up now, although I have one which I only use as a speedo when needing KMH as the speedo is hard to read at speed.

I keep to two basic apps, CoPilot and Maps.me, the latter is not improving much for driving since a bought it a few years ago, they seem to be going down the walking and cycling route, great but should be separate apps..

I prefer a separate sat nav ie not on my phone. Currently use tomtom which was only £79 and if I use it 5/6 years it’s cheap really. I do have CoPilot on the phone (paid for version) but found it stopped to often just as I needed it and came back to life after I’d gone through a junction, mainly when away in Europe.

Oddly that's why I stopped using my TomTom, it'd take too long to update after a junction,CP is bang on all the time even on this cheapo chinese phone, which is actually better than any Samsung I've had, £80.

I use a Microsoft Lumia 950XL phone.
It has free, worldwide, offline 'Here' maps and has never let me down around mainland Europe, the UK and the Canary Islands. I used it to get here in Spain without any problems,

Colin ???

I had here for a while, but it kept crashing, as did Waze.

One I'd never bother with ever again is the paid for version from TomTom, nothing like as good as the older standalones to use, and unusually for an app has to be paid for yearly, and can only be used on one device, commercial suicide IMHO.

Tom tom mobile on a samsung S8,routing and traffic information in excellent-£35 for 3 years.:)

Glad it works for you, :) :) I loaded it onto a tablet, which of course I don't have with me all the time, not realising it's limitations, so only of use in the van, subs run out now though.:Tears_of_Joy_Emoji:

We have a Renault fixed Tom Tom. Updates are expensive and it is cumbersome to upload.

It also doesn't know we're a MH. So we have learned to ignore it... After some interesting and sweaty adventures.

We have widows phone, like Colin. Here Maps is brilliant, cheap and instantly updated.
It also had no provision for MH..

Just had a look on google play and there are three versions of here, last time I had it on my samsung, I got a message saying there were no longer supporting it, I also tried to get the Garmin app, but it is limited to Sony phones, what's that about.

Both car and van have proper satnavs but i suspect they will be replaced by suitable tablets when the time comes. I like small phones so the display is way to small

Currently my preferred is GoogleMaps on my phone (Sony Xperia Z5Compact). Used it with a few niggles over the years (for car and motorcycle), but generally fairly happy with it as it's always got me to journey's end and it's free. :)

However I'm currently looking for something that will allow me to set a vehicle profile including width & height as the van we've bought has a very high roof (11" / 3.3m) and I don't want to get caught out under any low bridges!

Was looking at Co-Pilot for 'Caravan' and Sygic Truck apps, both in the region of £50-70, but I'm not sure if Sygic will send me down larger, 'trunk' roads, when I'm happier to take the slightly less large roads and see more countryside. Has anyone used either of these?

I'm happy to stick with software on the phone - I find the old 'resistive' touchscreens on sat navs too awkward to use (now that I'm more accustomed to the far more responsive screens on mobiles).

By proper you mean, built in or standalone?

It is about time we were accommodated, I dare say the algorithm would be a cow to write though, where you could add dimensions, but also choose route options to suit, as for the Resistive screens, I had the same problems till I got a stylus, no mistakes and a hit every time.

We use a TomTom Start 50 cat nap, sorry Sat Nag (that's a better description), to drive us to all wild POI's, CLs, CSs, Commercial & club sites, and pubs/car parks, but usually plan the route first before travelling with MAPS.Me on tablet the night before; we seem to have stopped using Navigon now, so I may delete that from my tablet. Now and again we need to check the paper map if it feels like we are off direction or using narrow roads when wider routes are available....

I looked at Navigon, "try it for seven days free" Hmm, not needing it right now, not going anywhere, when I do need it I'll need it for more than 7 days as I'll be in the van, none starter.

Well - there's at least 2 companies who HAVE written the algorithm (and Ordnance Survey have (IIRC) published the data), so it can't be that hard.

I think there's value in the freebies - but software takes a lot of effort to write, so I'm happy to pay for it, assuming it's well written. ;)

I've found the Renault fixed Tom Tom easy to update, especially the POI's, and updates are cheap in the Tom Tom sales. It definitely can take some inappropriate routes even for our little van, but is the best of several sat navs I use. The others are a garmin, nissan's own effort and another portable Tom Tom for the USA. The Nissan one was years out of date when I bought the car new, and nissan want a fortune to make it less out of date.

True, One day,I'll have to bite the bullet and hand over some of my pensioner's hard unearned.
Windows will stop supporting the phone, updates won't be available.
I wonder why they do that ?
