Seresto Collar for Spain?

We are booked through the tunnel early September. We are visiting friends near Limoges for a week and will then have 4-5 weeks to get back to Calais.
If we decide to go South, I think maybe we should get Seresto collars for the dogs to protect them from sand flies and Leishmaniasis. I have seen the effectiveness of these first hand, but we would be paying for 7-8 months cover whereas we only need 5 weeks (they are on an inclusive plan with our vets). Can anyone recommend an effective alternative?

I always use frontline from pets at home etc .
Pack of 6 pipettes £30+

I used to use Advocat but changed to Seresto as both dogs still picked up ticks in Scotland a couple of years back. Westie isn't too bad but no way could I remove tick from the Schi-Tzu.

When I had my cattery I recommended Seresto to customers who were finding spot-ons less effective.
Our dogs have monthly & quarterly pills under their vet cover that are very good. However, the UK ones tend not to protect against the dreaded sand flies.

@El radge I dont think Frontline protects against sand flies, unless they've changed it?

@Sharon the Cat I've used Advantix in the past, but you treat four weekly so you'd still be treating for a period when it's not needed.
Hi Jo,
I thought you would have some advice on this. I should think 4 weeks would cover us, I'll have to check with our vet that it won't clash with anything they are already taking.

I can't seem to find any sort of definitive map showing the areas affected. Would you know of one?

Thanks for your invaluable canine knowledge as usual.

Front line Tri act includes sand fly, they don't sell them in pets shops in the UK, you can get it online but very expensive, a good tip Spanish chemists sell all dog and cat repellents at a much cheaper price than pet shops.

Mmm - Google translate for the small print on Spanish veterinary supplies?

A few dogs have a reaction to Seresto.

We live in the Med, so in some places sand flies are 360 days. We use Seresto and an annual vax as nothing is 100%

Expensive BUT compared to getting Leisch, it's a no brainer.

Processionary caterpillar hairs can also be an issue. I carry human anti histamine in case Corrie picks up a hair. My vet suggested this, in an emergency.

We will definitely go with Seresto if nothing matches it.
We always carry Chlorphenamine Maleate (trade name Piriton) in case one of the dogs gets a wasp sting, so it's good to know we can also use it for caterpillar hairs.
One of our dogs came from Spain. She was tested for Leish, but of course it can become active later on.

It should be pointed out that the one a day type of human antihistamine that contains Cetirizine Hydrochloride should NEVER be given to Cats and Dogs. It can be deadly to them.

Happened to us a few years ago. Dog was stung in her mouth and was in a terrible state - I'll spare you the graphic details. We had been on a doggy first aid course a few weeks before and were carrying Piriton. Managed to get half a tab down her and she immediately calmed down and slept for the next few hours. I had to carry her for a mile back to the van.
Never leave the house without it now.

PS yes it has to be Piriton, the drowsy one. Another tip, if you buy at the pharmacy don't cheerfully say " oh it's for my dog" 'cos they will then refuse to sell it to you.

I take one a day as well for Hayfever. I don't get it bad but I breathe better and sleep better.

I only pointed out the danger to dogs from the wrong antihistamine because anyone googling on the subject can see this thread. Most people forget that once a post is out in the tinterweb, it is there for ever and for everyone to see. That is something to bear in mind on these forums because very few categories can only be seen by logged in members, the others are open to anyone.
