while at hollingsworth as we moved onto the field Pat noticed something hanging down once it was dry enough i got under to have a look and found the outer skin of the silencer hanging off ? it appears to be a sacrificial layer and is not blowing , got home from stone yesterday and this morning crawled under it wouldn’t seperate completely but i cut off the offending bit with tin snips and fastened the flap up with a long jubilee clip , MOT not till november but might get it renewed even though it’s not blowing as i’m off to portugal again in the new year sooner be prepared it’s the original exhaust on a 201306300799-1C99-4DD3-AA7F-070142E686EC.jpeg80372201-C3F7-48D1-A55F-CA7A57F271D4.jpeg7338FBFD-A35C-4330-AAF5-35051B197D5D.jpeg

The outer skin of the silencer. Or is it something someone has put over it as a heat shield even though there is already one fitted .
Mine has also started to lift but never failed the mot as it is not leaking .

However it’s worth remembering that you may be best to sort out another one in the near future…

I had that happen on my VW T5. Initially was quite worrying, but just removed the loose bits and ignored it :)

Personally, Ken. I'd take your MH with current exhaust for its annual MOT, then see what comes out during MOT inspection, if a pass great, and if you want peace of mind, replace exhaust prior to your pending Portugal trip. My thoughts only.

Mine dragged whilst travelling to France AA came out wired it up 2200 miles later and no problem. AA lad said it is not an MOT issue but is designed as a protective shield. There is a saying If it ain't broke don't fix it.""

Same happened to our 2015 Autotrail at the start of the year, I have just wired it up with some thick wire, could of cut it off but thought if I wire it up it will still be doing the job it was designed for, mot not till next month so we shall see.

Agreed!
Might be cheaper to have it done in Portugal, if the MoT guy thinks it will get that far.
If you need a hand with talking to a garage, just ask.

Me too, happened to a 2006 fiat that I bought as an emergency replacement MH to fulfil several pre booked family outings after our Burstner was nicked.
1st trip was the the Belgian GP where we spent the GP weekend at the end of a very handy disused loggers track only about 1/2 mile from the track. We left the circuit in a 'bit of a hurry' to avoid the queues and obviously travelled down the track a bit too fast. When we got home the exhaust looked exactly like the photo:whistle:
Pulled most of the outer skin off and sold the van about 4 months later.
