Earlier today something very odd happened. A post on Motorhomer managed to irritate me somewhat.
This caused me to reflect on why that's odd and why I find the site a comfortable place to be.
The style on MH since Phil had the foresight to set it loose has been very largely a positive one - and we have all benefited as a result. I believe that this is a result of the ground rules that Phil established at the outset and the way in which he and the moderators have continued to police those ground rules. Their efforts have attracted contributors who share the site's ethos.
The post that I found disturbing did so because I thought it disrespectful to another poster. My view is that it's fine to have differences and debate them - after all that's what real life is about and often the way in which we make progress on issues. The style when expressing differences is, however, important. Deeply sarcastic, bullying, disrespectful, insulting are surely all examples of styles we recognise and do not wish to see on MH.
The way in which we interact when considering differences has an enormous effect on progress or lack of it. And obviously it's OK to eventually agree to disagree, accept that position and move on.
I want to be part of a Moho community that is made up of people who are generally emotionally mature, supportive of each other and respectful of other's views. And that's why I choose to be here on MH and not elsewhere.
I really do hope that MH stays with it's established ethos and doesn't allow it's standards to be eroded in any shape or form.
Thanks for sticking with this post and please feel free to add your own views to the thread.
It feels good to have got that off my chest, even if I haven't done so very coherently!
