The Loire starts at the base of a volcanic core knows as Mont Gerbier de Jonc high up in the Ardèche mountains:

And there's a handy board available to aid the confusion of any intrepid explorer seeking to find the source of the longest river in France:

The 'Source Authentique' is basically a huge surface drain thoughtfully provided by the Touring Club of France:

Thankfully it was raining else the entire Loire valley would be dry to Nantes.
The 'Source Géographique' is just across the road from here in a restaurant car park.
The third 'Source Véritable' is my favoured source.
This one is perhaps 2 kilometres away from the previous two possibilities and adjacent to a restaurant. The water trickles from a spring:

........... and into a pond:

...............and then (eventually) to the Atlantic Ocean.
So to the thread title. If the French don't worry about the detail of the commencement of their longest river, why should we worry about the difference between 'sauce' and 'source'?
