.......of seaside landmarks in this BBC piece.
Some you may be familiar with, some you may have childhood memories of - and some you may well live near.
If you have any more recent photos or memories of these places, then please post them!

Aerofilms were a founding part of the company I worked for in the 70's, Hunting Surveys and Consultants. Their roots went way back to the days of very early aviation and continued through passenger services hopping down the length of Africa in direct competition with the ocean liners. The aerial survey section of Hunting Surveys was largely staffed by ex RAF officers and used aerial photo techniques to generate mapping for everything from oil and gas developments to town planning.

It is amazing the reach that such a small and specialised company had and it made for a very interesting few years for me.

John Leatherdale of Hunting Surveys could always be relied on for an inspirational lecture on photogrammetry.

Not sure if this counts, but around 1981 I was in Munster as guest of Hansa Luftbild (German equivalent of Hunting Surveys.)

As a courtesy they spoke in English and that night in a basement restaurant they sat me opposite a visiting Professor. It was Dr. Friedrich Ackermann, one of the most famous living names in Photogrammetry. He turned 90 in 2019, and I hope he is still well.

(Update: Corrected the spelling of the 'Fritz' surname.)

Half remember that name. Do you know if he was based at Elstree?

I spent time at the Elstree office repairing and manufacturing gear for the marine side of the job but occasionally had a lunch at the Mops and Brooms I think it was at London Colney along with blokes from the aero group.

Cheers

John was a Chartered Land Surveyor, and Mapping Manager at Huntings when I knew him all those years ago. His lectures were always memorable at the Photogrammetric Society given at Burlington House on Piccadilly.

My memory is less than perfect, but yes, I am certain he was based at Elstree Way before they closed down.
