Travel insurance with pre-existing conditions - recommendations needed

I've had a couple of medical scares in the past, but luckily have been fully recovered for years. I am used to paying extra for annual travel insurance but this year my renewal with Wesleyan has almost doubled from £172 to £325 for up to 60 days per trip, limited to European travel only. I have tried AllClear as a specialist insurer for pre-existing conditions but they nearly gave me another heart attack with a quote of £522 for the year, with a maximum holiday duration of just 55 days!!

Has anyone any experience of other insurers that cover pre-existing conditions they could recommend please?

Watching with interest.
I don't do taking the camper abroad but do visit family.
Last year whilst needing dialysis it was a nightmare finding insurance.
Went with All Clear eventually and it cost well over 300 quid for a 2 week holiday....more than the friggin flight!
I'm expecting the same problem next year despite the transplant.

I have recently changed to single trip as multi trip was becoming very expensive. I am currently running COPD, Arrhythmia, with HIgh Blood Pressure and Myeloma in the back ground. I used payingtoomuch.com and they found me a single trip policy for 31 days for £242. It lacks the “ just being able to get up and go” of a multi trip policy but is cheaper

That's a lot of expense for a month, but I suppose if you need to claim its not much.

My sister recommended a company called Insurewith.com and they won't offer me an annual multi-trip policy, but they did offer single trip cover for just short of 10 weeks for about £240, but it covers medical expenses only, with a £75 excess, rising to £775 excess if the claim relates to any of my declared pre-existing conditions.

The Wesleyan renewal quote is starting to look almost reasonable, but before I decide, I am going to contact all the companies kindly recommended by my fellow members on this and the Wildcamping forums since I requested help on Thursday.

One of the members on Wildcamping gave me a recommendation which resulted in my started off doing an online quote with The Insurance Surgery but a message popped up telling me to call them and speak to an adviser, who took all my complicated details and came up with a range of quotations starting at £698 with a £50 excess. After much discussion I decided I don't need £15million medical cover, nor baggage or cancellation cover, and this reduced the premium to £415 for £10million medical with £100 excess.

Going in the right direction, but still room for manoeuvre I hoped. The quote was for an annual policy with maximum trip duration of 93 days. I was thinking of going away for up to 65 days. If I change my plans to a maximum duration of 61 days the premium drops to £216. (By the way, a single trip insurance for 61 days was more expensive than the same cover on the annual policy)

So to summarise, by dropping medical cover from £15million to £10million, holiday duration from 65 days to 61 days, and excluding cancellation cover (I can only lose the cost of a channel crossing) and baggage cover (it can't get lost when its in the motorhome), I was able to cut the premium by almost 70% from the highest quote but more importantly it saves £109 on my renewal quote.
Once again this community has come to the rescue. It is great to have the resources of such wide and varied knowledge and shared experiences. Thank you to everyone who contributed. It has been much appreciated.

P.S. For anyone else with pre-existing medical conditions who have been following this thread, it would appear that the best choice of insurance provider can vary due to many factors such as age and medical condition and there isn't one company that's best for everyone. Nationwide seems a very good option but they wouldn't cover me. Allclear are highly rated but I found them very expensive. Wesleyan are very good but not competitive on price for me this year. I didn't try Staysure because the administration seems to onerous. It definitely pays to shop around, especially when an annual policy comes up for renewal.

After trying many companies and spending almost a full day on the phone I was with Insurancewith for 2 years as they gave the best price with the best cover. However, this year I had to add another thing to my list they declined to provide annual insurance but would do single trip. Apparently it is all done on a points basis and when you go over those points they won’t offer annual insurance. After spending another day phoning companies, as I was going away a week later, the only company that would cover me was AllClear at a cost in excess of £1000. This is for world cover excluding USA but includes cruises as I had 2 cruises booked. Expensive but cheaper than adding up all the single trips. It’s a total nightmare as none of my illnesses are likely to cause a cancellation or a claim abroad

They are probably not the cheapest, but at one time Allclear were the only company that would give me cover at all, every other one refused cover.

I feel your pain! I've spent days trying to sort out my insurance this year, but it made a big difference to the premium just excluding cover for cancellation and baggage, which you would probably want for a cruise, but I don't feel the need for it taking the motorhome to Europe.

You don't say whether your insurance is for the 'individual' or for a couple. I certainly found that when trying to insure my wife and myself it was cheaper to insure 2 individuals. We both have notifiable problems. In the end I used 2 different insurers, or so I thought, turns out they are both owned by a German company. I used https://www.getgoinginsurance.co.uk/ my wife used https://www.puffininsurance.com/. Both of these companies are owned by Union Reiseversicherung AG.

Ours is due anytime now and I have just tried getgoing insurance , for a 12 months multi trip for the both of us £84.20 , I will just go through the small print before I buy . Thanks for the Link
;)

It’s just an individual policy. The rest of the family are on a “free” travel insurance provided with our bank account but unfortunately it won’t cover me any more.

Thanks for the links.

I've run quotes on both your recommendations. I tried GetGoing Insurance first and got a fantastic quote of £71.25 for an annual multitrip policy, but then I realised it only covers trip durations up to 31 days. For longer trips they will only provide single trip insurance and for the 61 days I wanted the premium jumped to £307. (Still much cheaper than many other quotes I've had).

Next I moved on to PuffinInsurance and their quotes for annual policies ranged from £276 for up to 31 days to £512 for up to 62 days.

I would definitely buy annual cover from GetGoing if I wasn't going away longer than 31 days.

I just got a really good quote from GetGoing too, but the 31 day maximum duration isn't long enough for me this year. If 31 days was enough I can't imagine getter a better policy for my pre-existing medical conditions which they will cover in full.

We had an annual policy with staysure this time... previously LV. Dave has more "conditions" than me, I only have one minor. Cost £160 for annual up to 100 days. But...I wanted to extend the Europe cover for a three week trip to Thailand....an extra£159! So took a separate single trip insurance with Aviva for that! Btw staysure were ok dealing with claim after daves accident in April but refused to pay travel costs for getting to hospital for followups, discharge etc. It would have been 80 euros each way for taxi...no problem if I had claimed for four return trips. But I borrowed a car and tried to claim petrol and toll costs, saved them about 600euros. Had to really argue the case and only got a small amount for travel £68 total. So if you have a claim...get a taxi rather than mitigate claim costs!!!

I have travel insurance with my Royal Bank of Scotland account although I pay £10 per month which also covers among other things cash, our mobiles against damage/loss etc. We are both over 60 and I notified them of my auto immune system failure for my liver - they covered me for everything else apart from any claim regarding that until I was on 6 month check ups. Once that happened I had to pay them £30 for a telephone interview with a nurse? and they were happy to give me full cover again. So I suppose £120 a year but also covered for a lot of other things. Bob

We have the RBS travel insurance included in a £28 monthly account fee, and although it used to cover the whole family they withdrew the medical cover from me nearly six years ago (but they haven't reduced the monthly account fee).

Nationwide FlexPlus works well for us. They aren't really interested in "old" conditions: the question is always "have you had any treatment for this in the last 12 months?" Worth phoning them for a medical screening. If you want to open an account with them let me recommend you and they'll give us £100 each!
