Uk road tax

So if ur abroad does van need to be taxed!!! In the uk?
i know u are required to SORN vehicle of not taxed but!

I think you will find most European countries say that foreign vehicles must be legal in their country of origin.

After brexit who knows!!!

Ta. I thought so really.

Yes, vehicle needs to be legal in country of origin to enter most other countries. Would the other countries officials know is a different question.

I had a heated discussion with a couple down in Murcia who assured me I did not need to tax as it was a British tax. Having explained to them that the vehicle has to meet the legal requirements of own country I was told in no uncertain terms that "we were both police officer and we know". I shudder to think how they. went about their work in the past.

Wonder if they bothered with insurance either? That would, I think be invalidated if they were not taxed and MOT's. But some people know it all!

When I lived in Spain there were thousands of British registered vehicles owned by the expats , often running around with no tax ,mot or insurance.
The Spanish did have crack downs every so often .
Another very common thing was for brand new cars to be brought over on finance but never paid for , there was actually repo agents working in Spain making good money tracing and sending vehicles back to the uk.

With it being so easy to SORN & tax a vehicle online then I can imagine quite a few people chancing it. If you are going to be on a campsite for a month or more (some people seem to do this) then I don't know how you would stand. I would think that you could SORN it for the time you are off the road but not sure what the situation is regarding insurance. Can be insured & covered if my van is on the drive without tax? This is something for somebody who enjoys reading the small print on your policy. I always SORN my car if we are away for more than a complete month, doesn't save much but it's so easy, saved £20 on my last trip by doing this, re-taxed the car while we were waiting at Eurotunnel to come home.
Was on the long ferry back from Spain one year & speaking to a guy with a caravan who said he always SORN's his car when he leaves the country. Wonder if they check UK registered cars to see if they are legal when entering the country, with the automatic number plate cameras I would think it is easy enough to do.

It never ceases to amaze me the myths expats and long termers will believe. Many have got away with it because dealing with them is just too much hard work. Today they are much more connected and automated and able to get real data. You may well get away with no tax etc but equally having the local plods seize your vehicle and demand big money to stop them crushing it is getting more and more likely. To be legal in any country your vehicle must repeat must be legal at home. This will not change after Brexit and may be more rigorously enforced

The vehicle must be in the UK and stay in the UK for SORN.

Before SORN we used to stay in Spain for six months and post our tax disc home to our daughter to surrender it, she taxed it and posted it back for us to drive home so we saved 5 months tax a year (we were on a campsite and although Spanish Police drove round regularly checking vehicles they were not interested), once the law changed we never did it again because it would be a risk and who wants to have that worry

When I was overwintering in Spain we used our vehicle all of the time. I see no point in having a motorhome to stand it on a site for months on end. You can now renew tax online so no problems now that we don't have to display a disk. Spanish Police can check with DVLA same as anyone else to see if a vehicle is taxed, tested and insured. Our insurance Comfort also emailed the certificate. Only thing you cannot do is get an MOT outside of the UK.

I looked & couldn't find anything that says the vehicle has to be in the UK, it's something that I would be dioing anyway as we very rarely use campsites abroad & staying for a month or longer would drive us mad.

[h=3]When a SORN starts and ends[/h]
When a SORN starts depends on how you apply for it - your SORN will start:
  • immediately if you use your V5C reference to apply online or by phone
  • on the first day of the next month if you use your V11 reference to apply online or by phone
  • on the date you put on the form if you apply by post
Your SORN is automatically cancelled when you tax your vehicle again or it’s sold, scrapped or permanently exported.

You don’t need to renew a SORN.

Your vehicle must stay in the UK for your SORN to be valid. Find out what you need to do if you’re taking a vehicle out of the UK.
