What ID do you carry in your wallet?

Reason for me asking is I found a wallet on the road in the middle of nowhere. Inside was a driving licence so I had the name and postal address but there was no other id to use to contact this person... no mobile nor email.
Had there been one of these, chances are he would have still been local and we could have met up to hand it over.
I called my sister who is on fb (I'm not) and she said he was not on fb either.
I tried to leave the wallet at four different police stations, all of which were either unmanned or closed - only open on single days.
I was thinking this bloke has been asking for trouble not having mobile, email, fb and then I realised I would be in the same position if I lost my wallet...
So, what can you safely carry to aid the return of a lost wallet without giving too much to a scrote who might try to steal my identity?
I ended up posting the wallet to the address on his driving license so hopefully thats it sorted. Its an expensive game being a good samaritan. Next time I'll just go and punch a granny in the face

Not carried a wallet since I lost one in the 60s

We were at a sealife place this last trip and usually carry Lizs cards as she is purse and pocketless, anyway she'd asked me for her card as we pulled up so I gave it too her, went in to get a coffee while she went to the loo, I went to get my card out of my pocket and it was empty, I assumed it was in the car park or somewhere as we hadn't gone straight in there, anyway she came back with one of my debit cards but no cash or other cards, so a bit down we drank our coffees and walked around looking at stuff thinking they were lost, opened the van door and they were al on the step, very lucky as it was a windy day and if they had dropped to the ground they would have blown away under the van and not been seen.

I was mugged in Paris on New Year's Eve 1994 and my wallet was returned to me via Worthing Library by a member of the US Embassy in Warsaw who was on holiday! He said he had found 5 other wallets in the same place ... Thought no more about it until several months later when Police arrived at my workplace and invited me to assist them with their enquiries into the opening of a fraudulent Bank Account in Bognor Regis. My explanation was not well received by the cynical detective, 'Nobody can remember the date and time of the ALLEGED mugging like you quote, and there's something really dodgy about your ex-lanation . But I'll take a formal Statement from you, and, since it concerns a Driving Licence, I'll start by saying approximately when you passed your Driving Test ...'

'Friday, 14th July 1972 at 1130am, Officer ...' His muttered reply, not so sotto voce, was 'Bastard ...'

Ha! I remember my motorbike test was Friday 13th Feb 1976 at 3.00pm at Longbenton Newcastle... that when "The Ministry" as it was known locally came out and there were thousands on the road. I was cacking myself due to the traffic but I dont think the tester saw me due to the crowds and it was starting to get dark. Those days the tester stood by the side of the road for bike tests...
Anyway, what ID should I carry in my wallet?

Provisional driving licence???

In those days you got a provisional license by applying for it then went along to Westgate Road - where all the motorbike dealers were, chose your bike... up to 250cc solo or any size with a sidecar attached, handed yer money over and rode away.
Harry Woods salesman gave me the keys and asked if I had ridden a 250 Suzuki before? I said "No" and he said "You'll be ok and soon get the hang of it" and left me to it! That first ride through Newcastle traffic will stay with me forever...😬
The above test was about a year later for a Full Licence (motorbike) didn't get a full car license until 1981.
So, what ID should I keep in my wallet?

I remember finding a wallet and handing it in at the police station.
Got asked if there was any money in it. "No".
Go asked if I was sure. Can't remember if I said the following or just thought it but "if there was money in it and I nicked the money, would I then hand in the wallet to the police?". Stupid bloody question!

but to answer the question ... actually could be a good idea to have a phone number in the wallet or purse.

I dropped my wallet once ( hit me on the back of the head bending down for it) when we first moved to the borders but had my business cards in it. Unfortunately it was my old number , fortunately my neighbour had taken my old number 6656565 and she called to say the lady was in the cafe having a coffee and would wait for me to pick it up. :)

Found a wallet in the middle of Glen Etive a few years back. Got the guys phone number from a B&Q receipt in there......

A lot of them deserve it

My phone is gradually becoming my wallet. All my cards are loaded to it have Apple Pay and other stuff banking apps and the like. A tip I got years ago was too take photos of important documents like passport insurance driving licence and email to self. Even just the photos stored on phone are handy when you need to access the account number or driving licence number passport number when filling out forms.

I have an Android Phone and Google software engineers have made a complete pig's ear of Wallet [they may have sorted it out over the last 3 months!], because their crap coding caused the CVV number to evaporate, preventing me from using the cards! But I do have photos and paper copies of other items [in case the phone is stolen or lost], and duplicates on Elaine's phone [and vice versa!].
Ferry Tickets on both phones and downloaded to the Documents Folder, with a link to the download on the Home Screen. Paper original of Marriage Certificate [for Irish Passport Benefit] with Notarised Copy in the Travel File. Passports Photos Page on phone and in Travel File, and Credit Card details memorised [easy when it involves spending money, don't even have to pause!] and cryptic electronic notes to give backup reminders in case of stroke or similar ...

The good thing about Apple stuff is that everything that I do on phone then duplicates to my iPad and Mack computer automatically perfect for numptys like me. Apple stuff makes you lazy with tech stuff it costs a wee bit more but they are counting on that so people like me who know nothing about computers Spend extra and you kinda get locked into the brand.

I have two banking apps on the phone and that's it.

I hate the 'Apple Garden Lock In' and the Google equivalent, but the latter aversion cost me dear last Summer, Wully. I had deliberately chosen to install a free Photo App instead of being tied to Google Photos; which was fine until I bricked my phone before I had the chance to transfer the French Trip [mainly] War Memorial photos to my laptop and a back up drive ... Lost all the photos! Elaine has agreed that we can repeat the trip this year and take a fresh set of photos [I have a separate note of each location], to include the memorial at Laignes to 10 members of the Resistance who gave themselves up to be shot by Firing Squad to avoid the Town being burned down by the German soldiers, shortly before Gustav Amiot was taken from his house and shot against his own house wall by a German Officer whilst his wife was detained inside ...

If a thief "picks it up" they will just throw it over a hedge after taking anything of value from it.

Hand into the bank of the cards in the wallet ?
Put the phone number of a family member in your wallet so there’s no direct info to you ?

My wallet has a life of its own.
It hides in dark places, tries to escape, every time I take it out..
Last night, after walking back from a boozy meal, we more or less fell into bed.
At 1.15 am , I crashed awake with the "wallet panic ".. Had to get up.
It was still in my trousers pocket...
Little B@stard !
All my cards, Id, and cash are in there, plus laminated copy of passport and phone number.

I usually have a safe place thought when returning and under the influence but cant remember where in the morning.
