What is the best Internet devices to use in motorhome abroad, eg mifi, dongle, etc

I bought and EE dongle which works just great in the UK with shared account with my phone. HOWEVER from Calais it stopped working so I had to use the Phone as a hot spot.. I complained and the answer was 'tough you signed up for it like that' Be careful it is guaranteed to work in the continent.. The sim card has gone into my new iPad, which will also work in the UK but not abroad.. It was their signal being blocked that did it.
Virgin do a high use data card which rolls over. but I cannot go there as I have four months left on EE contract

I have a three mifi dongle, and can use up to 13gb per month abroad in most countries. An additional advantage is that it gives a London ip address (certainly when used in USA) which means that it can be used to watch UK tv.

We have both mobiles on BT with 16gb of 4g data each for £12 per month and a hard wired Motorhome WiFi router with a 3 Internet With Legs 24gb data card. We can watch TV Catch-up, iPlayer, Amazon, Netflix and listen to UK radio on the move everywhere we can get a signal - no satellite dish to faff around with.

A Three mi-fi unit with a 12GB data sim and Samsung phones on Three with 12GB data each to tether to, works very well (y)

I have an O2 phone contract with 60gb data and unlimited texts and calls for £30 per month. I'm delighted with it both in the UK and in mainland Europe. I use my phone as a wifi hotspot. O2 allow the use of the total data allowance when roaming and do not restrict bandwidth.

Colin ???

I have a teltonika 4G modem/router so it's just like being at home. There are 2 SIM slots and I use a EE sim in the first slot but if I were to run out of data I could buy a local one for the 2nd slot but I haven't needed to yet. I use a 'puck' type aerial that I place on the roof as I'm too tight to have it fitted properly.

I mostly use a Huawei mifi unit and a pure data sim from Three, with back-up from a small allowance on my phone and the remnants of another Three sim in my iPad. During a 7-week Europe trip this summer, I just about kept within the "acceptable use" limit of 12/13GB per month that Three impose. I'd bought a 24GB sim, so potentially could have exceeded the limit before using up the data. Next time, I'll buy 2 x 12GB sims, so I can switch over and use the whole 24GB without getting into trouble

Some good replies above but from what I have read the main providers only let you roam for short breaks or trips. What about several months in Europe? Would getting a local sim be the answer?

Hi Jenrai, the "above" achieve more gb by getting the most out of existing sims...as in one in each phone and one in mifi box. We also wonder about "several months" as we abroad for 4 months this winter. We have 15Gb via ee mifi (fair usage) but little on our phones. So have often wondered about local sims but all want long contracts with complex cancellation.....no easy payg data sim like the "nos" Portuguese one mentioned above these days. So we make do with 15Gb and free wifi....could do with more data for tv...Maja

Yes thank you for your reply, I guess I am more worried about having no phone service as currently with GiffGaff but same as O2 if they detect you abroad for more tham 60 days they can cut the service.

We have used three mobile for the last three years. The first year they cut us off after nine months. We did pretty well there; heard of others cut off after 3 months! They have never cut us off since. Our trips have been 10 months and six months.
Fair usage has gone up from 12 GB 15 GB per contract. We are heavy users and have 20 GB on the MiFi hub, 12 on James’ phone and I have just updated my contract from 4gbto 30!

With 3 you do need to check what type of contract you take as it makes a difference, the Advanced plan will let you create a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot to connect to and allows you to use up to 15GB of your allowance each month but you are unlimited on certain apps if you have Go Binge included with contract. Have a look here Using 3 abroad
