What would be your ideal van?

I think ours would be about 23/4ft, 3.5t, massive payload, two berth singles or fixed double. loads of storage, four high wattage Solar panels and batteries factory installed, built in charger sockets for phones etc, choice of TV points, comfy seating, super quiet dual fuel heating, air conditioning, built in high security (not added later), air suspension. levelling jacks, refillable gas tanks, external gas bbq and shower points, external 240 and 12 volt electric points.
6 speed manual, cruise control, economic.
Is it a realist ask. It should be able to be offered by the major makers.

inflate the tyres with Helium to lower the base weight?
That general list all looks very reasonable but not in a 3.5t package

I don't want a scooter but 3500 is my ideal.

Might be possible using a lot of expensive materials, otherwise, it's a long shot at 3500 GVW.

If I wanted a scooter or needed more weight or space capacity, it would be a trailer. No doubt about that.

Unimog U4000 expedition vehicle.

Probably couldn't afford the fuel to run it though.

Do you know, I honestly think I've already got my ideal van... love her to bits, warts and all. It would have to be something really extraordinary to make me change... that or if Birdie went terminal on me, heaven forbid!

A alloy and grp rust free van with galvo chassis and body panels which are removable in sections for repair should some old fart bump into me,all this along with a old type diesel engine which is easy to fix.

We seem to have found ours twin singles over a cavernous garage, we uplated from 3500kg to 3850kg simple free exercise to downplate if I can’t retain my C1 entitlement after the New Year. And yes it has a great payload enabling me to carry my scoot in the garage and bring home lots of Spanish wine.

I've a feeling its just the way this particular forum software works, ie it shows all the photos that have been posted in the current thread.
I'm sure Phil will be along to help if I'm wrong.

By the way, just for info, Phil started a thread for people to report forum glitches or to ask questions about how things work. It's in the Community Forum under the Community News section, here...

Edit to say:
Doh! Ignore the above! Apologies, I've just realised there's a much newer place on the forum now, specifically for forum queries and you posted yours in exactly the right place *****.

For those who hadn't noticed it (erm, me for instance!) its here...

The photo in post 9 does not do it, but that is a full size pic

That could be down to a quirky difference in the way the photo was inserted, ie between attaching a photo or pasting it. I'll check with Phil at some point and report back :)

As a matter of interest *****, which little icon did you use to insert your photos? Would also be useful to know which process Phillybarbour used for his photo. Thanks :)

*****, I've tested it out and it seems that any photo in the thread inserted or attached as a thumbnail will show in the stream at the bottom of the photo view window. Any photo inserted or attached full size doesn't show in the photo view window at all. It makes sense because a full size photo doesn't open the photo view window if you click it, whereas thumbnails do. So, with thumbnails, the forum software automatically gives you access to all photos in the thread when you open the photo view window but full size photos stay 'in-line' in the post text because they're already fully visible. Hope that makes sense :)

Indeed we are very happy with ours as well... Light and airy. especially dining/kitchen. Enough room and a fixed bed. Decent shower with door to stop water going all over the bathroom. Good locker & cupboards inside. Only minor hiccup is the underbed storage which is a bit small ..but at least we can get to it either from the outside "garage door" or by tilting the bed. Also Gas-It and solar !
We (I) did look at another vehicle last year..£20K extra for marginally lees room / convenience....SANITY (and stinginess) prevailed !

I spent years researching my ideal van, and found it six years ago. No intention of changing it, certainly encourages me to look after it.

Relatively small and compact but with a shower and toilet and good for being off grid. Our Swift Rio 310 is almost perfect. One addition we would have lived is water heating from the engine when travelling. Had this on a MoHo in New Zealand and made such a difference to gas consumption for off grid camping.
