Which Mifi

Good evening all. I have just changed our van and I was thinking of changing my ancient mifi router for a newer one. Has anyone any ideas for the best choice please.

I used a Huawei mifi for many years...chose one which had aerial sockets ( for poynting aerial) and was a decent speed. But. Lately been using my new phone which seems to do the job just as well. Suppose it depends on what you use the internet for. Ours is streaming films and catching up on emails and a bit of browsing. There is a baffling amount of tech out there at a huge range of prices!

As @Rec says, very much depends on usage. If usage does not require high speeds, 4G units are relatively cheap, but you might want to consider a 5G unit for future-proofing if you expect to be keeping it for many years. If so, be somewhat wary of the many attractively priced units shown as 4G/5G, as the 4G is the mobile signal, but the 5G in fact refers to the 5Ghz WiFi signal rather than 5G mobile. I currently have a ZTE 4G unit, with which I am very pleased, and am considering upgrading at some point to 5G.

Netgear nighthawk...expensive yes, the best across the whole of Europe by far with Poynting Omni external antenna on the van

I have a 4G Huawei Mifi router and a Poynting aerial here which I doubt I will ever use again. I bought them both for the house, not the van and they are both in good condition. If you are interested I will work out a price that is reasonable.

I have a Huawei 4g router that I have used for about 8 years. It still works without an aerial but I just thought as we have bought a new, to us, van I might just treat us. We only use it for emails or looking through google or fb.

I use a netgear nighthawk but find the Poynting Omni external antenna makes no difference at all.

Agreed, a complete waste of money as they have no range. I have a (very) old directional aerial that is far better.

Depends on router usage. Mine is used by the satnav for traffic information and by passenger when I'm driving, so directional aerial would not be much use!

My only experience here was the van came with a TP link router connected to the already in place Poynting Omni external antenna. 5g sim car in and pretty much everywhere I went the signal was pants.

Changed to a Netgear Nighthawk with the same SIM card and its streets ahead. Then found if I disconnected the Poynting Omni external antenna it made no difference what so ever.

Between these 2 routers I’ve used others work work travel, but the best I’ve found is the nighthawk, obviously I’ve not tried all mobile routers so it may be there’s a better option, but the nighthawk is generally fast enough for any WiFi needs.
